2001 nissan Frontier 6 cyl no turbo, automatic. 130,000 miles. Truck has had easy life and good care. The gauge on dash shows normal warm up, about 2 minutes to reach just under one half on gauge. The temp reading stays normal for about 20 minutes of driving at 45, then the gauge slowly moves up to hot, over a period of another 5 minutes or so, and stays there until truck is turned off. The entire cooling system checks out ok. Radiator 2 years old, not loosing water. New water pump, new sending switch to gauge on dash. Original gauge on dash. Wiring visually checks out ok. Engine is normal hot to touch. No smells of coolant leak, fan clutch new. Hoses 4 months old. New radiator cap. Everything is new or in good shape and yet it still shows hot after about 20 minutes of driving. No signs of any kind of overheating of engine, no friction, the engine is performing admirably.  The block checks out good, NO LEAKS OF COOLANT OR WATER. My best guess is that the gauge has some how faulted. Before I spend the money to replace the gauge, I wanted ideas from all of you, as to what is causing this problem. Please offer any ideas you can that will help. Thank you for reading my post.

I'd think the sending unit may have gone "kaput" even though you say it is fairly new.  Is it a Nissan part (OEM) or an aftermarket?  make sure to use a real Nissan part.

The sending unit was from Kragen auto supply , brand new and as soon as it was put in, the same readings occured, normal for about 10 miles of driving, and then slowly, over a period of 5 miles, going up to hot mark with engine at normal temp. It is possible that the part from Kragen is bad, even though it was new. I will buy the part, again from the dealer and try it out.

Make sure that there is enough coolant in the system. You
may be getting bubbles in the system causing the sender to
read air instead of liquid.

If its full and its still having that problem, then replace
the sender with genuine nissan.

Thanks for all the help. I will post again in a few days. The reading was normal, for a full day of driving today, only 25 miles from store to store to do my job of merchandising. I did notice that I seem to have a faint smell of coolant when I come to a stop. Its very faint, I think it could be spilled coolant from the past. It does have me concerned though. As stated before, I cannot find any leaks, the engine runs like new, the temp reading is now reading normal. There are no leaks anywhere. I must stop foaming and rinsing my engine every couple of months, I think I may have gotten water in the electrical bundle under the split tubing, which may have dried out. I replaced about three foot of the tubing since it was looking old and heat checked. I also used electrical tape at the ends of the joints, as it seemed to be from original. The engine is clean, even the underside of the hood. So for now, I will have to see what happens. The only hoses I never replaced, are two short 3 inch long, or so, hoses on the very back of the engine, near the top, they hook to metal pipes. These hoses also seem fine, I got within a few inches of them with my eyes and a high power flashlight, and they seem ok, but eventually I would like to replace the also, but they are held in place with those squees clamps, and I cannot reach them with my hands. I cannot afford to have the intake manifold (I think thats the name of it) removed to get to them, is there any way to replace those hoses without removing the manifold? I deeply appreciate all you help that you have offerd so far. Please offer any more help you can. Sincerely, Mike Magoo, captainmagazine@yahoo.com (guild wars fan).

Have a nice 4th of July Holiday and a good summer.
