I have a ton of trans fluid leaking out of the bell housing at the bottom of the bell.  There fore I am trying to remove the trany to replace the oil pump seal. I assume that is also the converter seal.  It says to replace the converter if you find metal flakes on the parts or magnet but does not say what size.  After cleaning the magnet in the oil pan I saw metal flakes so small I could hardly see them and nothing larger or smaller than those were on any other parts. Do I replace the converter because of that?
I also am having a problem trying to see the top bolt on the bell housing to remove it.  Any ideas how to get at it?  Also the middle bolt on the dip stick seems to be impossible to see also.
Thanks for you help.Cry  2001 Frontier 4x4 SC KC

I wouldn't worry about the converter. It helps to have eyes
on the ends of your fingers!!! If not, a very long
extension and swivel socket will get it done. Used to be
able to have one of those out and back in less than 2.5
hrs(those were the good old days). Now it takes over 6 hrs
to do an 05 and newer Frontier.

Thanks, I have another question.  When I started to remove the flexplate to converter bolts there was 3 missing.  Ever hear of hat before? the dealer wants 8bucs for each one, know of a cheaper place.  2001 Nissan Frontier SC 4x4 V6 Auto.  It is a bigger job on a 4x4. I have to remove the torsion bars and cross member. This is a driveway job not on a lift.  I'll let you know tomorrow if the bolts were inside the bell housing.

Even on a 4X4 it was a 2.5 hr job, but we had an adapter
that bolted to the trans and to the transmission jack. You
are very brave removing that in a driveway. Hopefully you
will find the bolts.

Well it's out.  The bolts are no where, the three that were missing.  I found the source of the leak.  In very center of the converter facing the engine there is a dimple.  It's diameter is 1" across and recessed 1/4".  On the one side there looks to be a weld that went bad on he edge of the circle about 3/4 " long. Next to the scar, in the very center, is a pencil size hole that would match up with the trans shaft center hole. It is a rectangular hole though not round.  See picture.  So what we have here is a possible loose bolt or three that has punctured the converter, maybe, and three missing bolts that could not have survived had they been loose while driving. Another very interesting thing I discovered was that one of the four bolts that bolts the converter to the flex plate has striped threads.  How is that possible unless it happened during production? You vote, Production problem or Vandalism, or unbelievable quirk?  Does anyone see my problem?

Where's the picture? Have you owned the truck since day
one? Make sure to use lock tight on the bolts when going
back together.

Still not sure how this happened.  The converter center peace the inserts into the crank shaft had broken off leaving a hole in the converter.  Originally because of timing and the conditions surrounding my ability to make a living allowed me to consider that a transmission oil change using a pump spliced into the cooler lines stirred up enough junk that it caused the seal to go bad.  This may still be the case or it is just a worn seal after 90,000 miles.  Either way I still cannot explain the missing bolts. I have uploaded the pictures to my Gallery and supplied a few here.  I discount foul play because I just don't know why someone would hate like that and we must look forward and not worry about the past if we are to survive. I can see a place for the bolts to drop out once they are off but am sure they would have made a lot of noise doing so.  The treads being messed up is really strange.  I bought this truck new and on Christmas eve in 2000 and never had it serviced.  I did all the work myself including the timing belt.  Real success there.  It has performed flawlessly for ten years so I can not complain.  My last Nissan truck I had was also 12 years old when I traded for this one being the trans was overheating after towing cross country 3 times.   ClapTongue

The "knob" broke off the t/c due to the loose/missing bolts
that secure it to the flex plate.

OK, that is possible.  It is also possible that it was the seal causing the leak and I broke off the knob trying to remove the trans in a driveway.  But, what I want to know is has anybody ever had trans bolts come off and if they did what was the damage, and it is very possible this happened at the factory and only one bolt was ever in the t/c to start.  Not sure though, just a possibility.  So how many of these incidents happened before? How do I find out? It's called a pilot bearing isn't it? Is this forum owned by Nissan?
