I'm looking at purchasing a used 01 Frontier.  Its the v6 crew cab with 165K miles.  Owner now bought it from a dealer a couple years ago  and said does not have service records prior to him.  He has not done the timing belt since owning it.

What scares me is the timing belt.  No real way for me to know when it has been done last or if it's been done at all.

Since it has 165k miles, what are some of the things I need to look at when inspecting the truck? Common issues etc.....

Also, since Im new to the frontier how long does the V6 and auto tranny usually hold up if not abused.  I'm used to ford trucks and know they are usually good for 200+ miles easy if taken care off.

Its being used as a daily driver with the occassional pulling of 2 jet skiis and that's about it.

Any input/suggestions would be appreciated.

If you listen to the base of the distributor w/ a
stethoscope or long screw driver, if the TB is loose, it
will sound like a rattling bearing in the base of the dist,
worse when the engine is cold. At 165K, it is possible to
be on it's 2nd replacement belt. I have seen them noisy at
80K. Check the trans fluid etc., rust is a big issue in the
northeast, other than that, give it a good look over.
