my 08 frontier with 28k miles has a valve body rattle for
2-3 miles when first started. The dealer said all 4.0
engines do this. I'm running 5w30 synthetic blend oil.
I'm thinking of going full synthetic mobil one to see if
this will help. Is this valve noise normal? Any input?

I doubt it is valve noise as they use solid cam followers.
It is more likely timing chain noise which usually only
last 2-3 secs. What oil filter are you using?

I agree with Frontier guy.  The anti-drain back valve on some filters does not allow proper oiling.  I typically use a Purolator Pure 1 which has a silicone ADBV along with Mobil 1 0w-30 (or 5W-30).  No issues on noise.  Try changing the filter to a good high quality brand.  Pure 1, NAPA Gold, Wix are all excellent.

Both my 2006 Xterra and brand new 2010 Frontier make that noise on start up too - until the engine is warmed up a little. Seems worse in cold weather. It does sound like valves clattering. I was a little surprised to hear it from my brand new vehicle, fresh from the factory, less than 1000 miles.

2007 SE here with full Mobil 1 synthetic (I was living in Palm Springs and didn't want to worry about 114 degree days driving.)

Still have the knocking at start up. Kind of unsettling but its nearing 70K without fuss.

My frontier definitely has valve chatter on start up which is worse in colder weather.  The best combination I've had is Valvoline Synthetic Blend 10w-30 with a Purolator PureONE filter.  Somehow this creates the shortest length of ticking upon start up.  I've tried 0w-30 Mobil 1 and AMSOil which made it worse and Mobil 1 5w-30 & 10w-30 Full Synthetic but find that somehow the Valvoline works the best.  That's just my two cents.  To each their own though.

Spiffy1,
As stated before,it is not "valve chatter", as they use
solid cam followers. Timing chain rattle is most likely the
case, which goes away in 2-5 secs.

I have a similar problem with my 2005.  A while back I posted about this, and the reply I got back was that the exhaust manifold may be a little loose and causing this noise.  I thought that might be it, because I had a 78 Vette that use to do it but stopped after I changed the exhaust manifold gasket on the right side and tightened it up. (Of course, completely different engine designs).
