I have a 01 Xterra with a V6, My heater core started leaking so I have pluged the two hoses on the engine side and now the AC dont work. Does the heater core have to be connected in order for the AC to work .Can anyone help me. Thanks, baykahz

The comp does not engage now. Blower fan works. Comp was working until I disconnected the heater hoses and plugged the lines. Was going to put the lines back in to see if AC would work again but one of the plastic lines coming out of the fire wall has snapped really close to the firewall. Checked the two AC fuses both are good AC switch lights up. Thanks for the info. Any more advice?

It may be a coincidence, and it is low on refrigerant. Not
a good thing breaking the plastic nipple. Unless you are
very lucky, the heater/ac unit will need to be removed for
repair.

The heater core does not have to be connected in order for the AC to work. A damaged heater core prevents the car from providing you heat during cold weather. The problem apparently lies in the AC itself, so have it examined to determine which component causes the problem.
