In the last day or so I began hearing a feint grinding
noise. Today, while heading down the road at about 50mph,
the noise got louder and then I heard a loud thump. I
thought it was a flat tire, but when I pulled over and
looked, I found that 3 of the studs had sheered off and
the wheel had come off the remaining 3. The rotor was
resting on the inside of the rim. I jacked up the car,
"borrowed" 3 lugs from each of the other rim and put the
rim back on in hopes of limping 3 miles back home. No
dice. The wheel will not roll. The rotor doesn't look
bent. Is it likely that something inside the hub is
broken?

Most likely the parking brake shoes have separated and are
wedged preventing the rotor from turning. Sometimes those
noises are a warning to stop and check things out before
things go real bad!!!!!
