I've got a 2003 4 cylinder Frontier and ran into some
problems trying to replace the three drive belts. The
first belt came off no problem, as I loosened the idler
pulley and the belt came right off. The second belt had a
bolt similar to the first, but I could not loosen the slack
on the belt at all. Any advice as to what I'm missing? I
downloaded the Nissan service manual and it appears as
though on the diagram that there is no idler pulley for the
middle belt so not sure how to loosen the slack. Please
advise. Thanks!

I just did this with my 2001, same engine. The middle
belt is the Alternator belt, there is a bolt right above
the alternator to adjust it. The alternator itself acts
as the idle pulley, unlike the Power Steering and A/C
belts. Take care when adjusting these belts, its easy to
overtighten the adjusting bolts and cause them to strip
and or bend. If you are replacing all three belts, make
sure you put the correct matching belts back in in this
order: A/C belt first, then Alternator belt, lastly the
power steering belt. Personally I replaced the idler
pulleys on both the Power Steering and A/C. Not terribly
expensive. Frontierguy recommends going with genuine OEM
Nissan belts and he is correct as the cheaper variety are
prone to slippage. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I did notice that there was a
groove where the pulley attaches to the alternator. I
could not get the alternator to budge though. Is there
something else I'm missing there other than those two bolts
to get the alternator to move?

After reading several forums, searching for how to
change the drive belts for my 2001 nissan Frontier 2.4L,
without finding detailed step by step instructions, I
decided to post one here.
You will need to change the belts in order from the front
bumper to the one closet to the engine.
First belt (Power steering pump)
1. Trace the outer belt until you reach the right pulley
on the top (near the distributor cap). You will need to
loosen the idler pulley bolt and the adjustment bolt in
order to release the tension on your first belt. This is
the easiest one to take off
Second belt (Alternator)
2. This is the middle belt and is usually where people
have the toughest time removing. Using Hayne's repair
manual was not much help...although it had pictures, the
steps were incomplete. You will need to locate the idler
pulley near the battery. Most people have no problems
loosening the the adjustment bolts and idler pulley nut.
Like the OP had said, nothing happened after he loosened
this bolt/nut.
You will need to take out the adjustment bolt (long one)
and leave the other one slightly loosened holding the
rectangle hex connected. Then use a rachet wrench or
crowbar as a lever to separate the space between the
rectangle hex and the adjustment nut hole. By doing
this, you are pushing the alternator closer to the
crankshaft pulley, using the rectangle hex horizontal
slot as a guide. This is why you keep the rectangle hex
connected.
Keep doing this and you will loosen the tension on the
belt enough to remove it.
Third belt (Air Conditioning)
For this one, you will need to get underneath your truck.
Remove the mud guard. Locate the idler pulley that is
nearest to the ground. There are two bolts holding this
idler pulley in place (adjustment bolt and idler pulley
nut). They are both nearest to the ground. Loosen this
and you will be able to loosen the tension on the belt
enough to remove it.
You are now done!
