kay, time to buy new tires
i've owned before and loved the bf goodrich mud terrains,
tirerack, costco and my other major local supplier (lex
brodie) all say they don't make a direct fit match for my
'02 XE CC 4x4 truck (which is 265/70-15). all they say
will fit are namby pamby tires. i assume this is simply
a CYA move.
at the same time my vain side also wants to buy a new set
of wheels (i'm a sucker for plain simple black rock
crawlers)
so help a brother out and tell me how i can justify
spending more money (by buying new rims to get the tires
i want) and putting on a set of wheels and tires that
don't technically fit (assumed mpg, braking, power,
possible contact issues) and why that all makes sense
other than simply to satisfy what i want......

I put a review of the Michelin LTX A/T Radials on there. They are off factory spec size, being 31/10.50/15s. They were the first tire to go on my truck @ 18,700 miles, and Ive got around 87,000 now and no problems. I also have factory 15 inch rims which 'should' be running the 265/70/15 or 265/75/15 whichever it is, I cant remember nor do I care. Its all about 31/10.50/15 :D

thanks for the reply dsarains, was wondering if anyone
comes on here ;-p
actually i need something with a bit more off-road bite.
looking around some more consumer reports rates the
pirelli scorpion as the best all terrain tire for light
truck, but they (of course) don't have my exact oem size
match and they're pretty pricey as expected. CR also
recommends the bridgestone dueler a/t revo. they don't
even test the bf goodrich brand, nor any mud terrains,
SO, i'm still at somewhat a quandary here.
looks like in order to put on most brands i'd have to buy
new rims and get into the whole fitment problem world, or
i have to go with one of the few direct fits which seem
to pin me in on tires that won't hold up to the
performance needs i'd have, somewhere in the 40% off road
range, over roads that are pretty vicious and gnarly.
so again, anyone else have these same issues with looking
for new meats on their frontiers??

why don't you stick with the BFG but get the all-terrain instead of the mud-terrain. I know they make the all-terrain in a 31/10.50/15 and also a 32/11.50/15 which if it doesn't rub would really fill the wheel well. As far as the wheels you don't need to justify it lol. just do it as long as the price is right. I would recommend findest the lowest price you can online or at a local tire shop and then taking that price to america's tire/discount tire to price match. they don't have the cheapest prices off the bat but they price match and all future services are free. hope this helps

oh and i wouldn't go with the scorpions. they are a great tire but probably not as aggressive as your looking for. they are more meant to hold up on 3/4 ton trucks and especially good when towing. the dueler revo's are a really good tire and probably more along the line of what your looking for.

thanks nverdina for the really good info.
i'm leaning towards a more aggressive tread as i don't
drive for long stints on asphalt, nor very often, and then
we use the truck fairly often (hopefully even more so when
there's some real meats on it) offroad on some gnarly lava
and occassional sand
the dueler revos are intriguing me, and the all-terrain bfg
seems entirely reasonable

Also look at General Grabber AT2 tires. They have the Goodrich AT tread pattern but at a lower cost and get very good reviews.

Some great suggestions so far.
For sizes, you're okay with a stock rim up to a max of 31x10.5R15 After that, the rim is too skinny and will have problems holding the tire (from what I was told)
I currently run Big O brand "X-Treme Terrain" tires.. I've gone through my first 2 at 37k and am wearing out my back 2 fairly slowly (2 were popped and replaced with brand new ones at 28k) link
They do fantastic in all weather, but they did drop my gas mileage about 2mpg (they are a heavy tire) They are great offroading, but they do bite hard, so they seem to sink in sand and gravel unless you've got speed on your side. I went with 30.5x9.5x15 because I want the articulation, though I know I could fit 31's, and if I got 32's, they would rub.
