ok quick question, for anyone who has a CAI and/or aftermarket exhaust, i know that by having more flow out your rear, you can lessen your low end grunt but i've also heard that you can cause damage such as burning up valves and stuff like that...anyone ever heard of that or have any problems with engine issues after intalling one or both of the above aftermarket products.

also, if any of you have had the custom tubes products exhaust with the two pipes coming out at the OE point, how has it worked for you and have you found that you have had the HP and torque gains that it shows on the dyno sheets on their site. just looking for some general feedback on potential problems.

thanks

Frontyfan,

I had both an aftermarket CAI (AirAid) and Exhaust (Banks), but recenly removed the exhaust.  I removed it due to it being louder than I personally wanted, no other reason.  I did notice a loss of low end grunt, which has returned since putting the stock exhaust back on the truck.  But, I have also noticed a drop in my gas mileage as well!  As far as burnt valves, I have only heard of this being a problem if you were to run the engine with no headers or exhaust manifolds on the engine.  Honestly, you could probably remove the stock exhaust completely, leaving the OEM exhaust manifold and CATS in place and not worry about burning the valves!

Can you post a link to the Custom Tubes Products Website?  I'm interesting in see what they have to offer.  I'm considering finding a custom pipe shop that can fabricate a new head pipe and "Y" assembly for my stock exhaust to replace the restrictive stock "Y" pipe, which really looks to be the biggest choke point in the whole stock exhaust setup!  Thanks...

the link for custom tube products is the following: although i'm pretty sure it's in this site somewhere, i'm happy to list it again.

http://www.customtubeproducts.com/exhaust.htm

there ya go, they call it a dual exhaust but i'mgonna venture to say it's not a true dual exhaust due to the single muffler, however, it has to flow better than the stock muffler.

Since there is currently no way to re-program the computer you could end up running the truck lean.

the ECM will adjust the air fuel mixture to compensate for the increased airflow so there is no risk of that.

You think so?  To what point? The ECM has limitations can you tell me what they are?
Can I supercharge the truck and count on the ECM to adjust? How about a turbo? Obviously there are limitations. Can you tell me exactly where those limitations are?

We put a cold air intake and a 2.5 inch exhaust on a o4 Taco and it was runing an a/f ratio of 14.8:1 at wot.  Would you be comfortable running 14.8:1?

The fact is that even small modifications such as intake and exhaust can cause a lean or rich condition. Unless you dyno the car with an a/f monitor you have no idea how well the ECM is adjusting.

On the otherside of the coin on my 98 Camaro I have run a 150 dry shot of nitrous and the PCM has had no problem adjusting the fuel.

My point is - unless you do the proper testing you really have no idea how well the vehicle is reacting to these changes.

kinda argumentitive today?   i am going by what the service manager and i discussed when he ok'd the K & N filter in my truck. i spoke with him about a catback and a NISMO intake. he said it would pose no problems with the engine at all. he said as long as the exaust mods are aft of the cats and sensors, and the K & N filter or Nismo intake are installed properly i will have no issues with it running lean.

there would HAVE to be some way for the ECM to compensate for different oxygen/airflow levels or  the vehicles running in high elevations would  lean out and be problematic and vehicles at sea level would run rich.
