Hard to say. I think the only way to find out is to do a comparison

kcidmil is correct, the only way to find hard data on it unless you can find it in research on teh internet is to take it off and try and get some data on it yourself...i'd make several comparison...using a semi scientific method, you should use the same gas, try and drive with the same style (tho this is obviously the most difficult part to maintain accuracy) and run several tests over a period of time, say 3 tanks of gas for each and collect data on each group (i.e. with the rack and w/o the rack) i personally have wondered about this myself with my 01 fronty, but not so much the rack but how much that air dam on the front of the rack makes a diff if it were to be removed, and have been considering taking it off to test it, but haven't as of yet. now, a big difference would be to add a bed cover, i know one individual here, maybe more indicated seeing around 5mpg better on their economy, not sure if that was city or highway or an aggregate of the two but that would definitly make a difference in the wallet :)

For bed cover.... 6 mpg city, 8 mpg Highway. That was the gains I noticed for mine.
I also did a comparison between 85, 89 (which has 10% ethanol here) and 91.
85 burnt way too quickly due to the extreme lack of power. I had to keep my foot planted to get up and go. 89 seemed to be worse, especially at highway speeds, I swore I could almost see the needle dropping slowly. 91 did decently, and lasted the longest.
Here's where it got interesting though. After spending about 5 months doing that test where I filled up on Ellsworth AFB at our shopette. Sam's Club built their own gas station where prices were MUCH cheaper. They only offered 85 and 91. Which was a huge relief for me when it came to my Maxima. The ethanol tears my injectors apart, and I cringed everytime I filled up someplace. Why the fuel tanks were supposed to be seperate with no mixing. Some stations were known to mix them.
Now, the supplier for Sam's Club must use a different method, because I have noticed more power, and better fuel mileage compared to the base's pumps. I was trying to attribute it to maybe it was just winter, and more gas was making it in due to the increased density of the fuel. But it wasn't, I got the same mileage and power all year long.

thanks for the feed back guys. i did take off the air dam from the front of the rack. i havent pulled any numbers os wrote down any test, but taking that front peice off made a little difference. i only fill up once a week now. with doing that, and trying to cut down on the led foot, gas mileage has become a lot better.

hey 4xfrontyxe,
i'd be very interested in knowing what kind of numbers you're seeing with the air dam removed from the roof rack, since you are suggesting that you are seeing a difference in mileage, i would also guess you are noticing less noise at highway speeds too? cause that air dam, while looking cool sure does make a lot of noise with air going over it. pls let us know what you are noticing for numbers, especially any comparisons if you kept records prior to removing the air dam.

well since another member had mentioned that he felt it made a slight difference by taking the air dam off i decided today while watching my niece and nephew play in the front yard with my gf to do th same. i'll run a few tanks of gas with it off and write down what i find and post it with comparison numbers from before, since i have been driving extremely conservatively we'll see if it makes any difference overall. i hope it does, but i can't really decide if i like the look w/o the air dam, but that could be due to me just being used to it being there, but the 05's don't have it right? just a roofrack? i can't remember, one thing i will be happy with if it disappears is the noise that thing makes at highway speeds or windy days. anyway, i'll let y'all know.

ok well looking back on my little experiement, which i'll put the
numbers down a little later, seeing as how it's 5:30 am and i don't
particularly feel like wandering out ot my truck just yet, i have been
pretty good about keeping track of my numbers for mpg before and after
i took the air dam off...on this last tank of gas i added the dam back
because well it looks better on those frontys that have it, in my
opinion, and since taking it off i haven't noticed a noticeable
difference in feel or the numbers (which again i'll post a little later
as an edit for this), now before i started this whole thing, i
mentioned wanting to do this experiment to a friend of mine and he
said, he would guess that the engineers would have figued this into the
building of hte truck and i probably wouldn't noticed a huge
difference, i figured he had a point there but then again sometimes i
figured it couldn't hurt ot check it out with the price of gas
nowadays. so what i did was i took the air dam off as i mentioned
before and have run several fill ups, now i haven't kept this
experiment as scientific as i could have, by switching some filling
stations and what not, but i figured in the real world, most of
us don't always fill up at hte same station all the time anyway,
although i'm considering running that experiment as well to find out
which gas gets me the best performance and mileage. well anyway as a
rough estimate i avg. around 16.5-16.7 mpg with the air dam both on and
off it seems..but i could be off a tiny bit since i am just pulling
numbers out of my head and not lookin at the numbers or calculating
them, almost all the tanks, w/ the exception of one was run with 87
octane gas which is our regular around here in texas...and in that tank
i ran the BG44K and to be honest didn't notice any difference there
either in gas mielage from what i can remember. well just some
information for y'all. i'll post the numbers as soon as i can
