So I had some serious grinding in my right front brakes.
I took it into the local brake shop and they brought me
in and showed me that the caliper had froze shut and the
pads had been pretty much ripped off so they replaced
the brake pads and rotors on both front wheels.

Upon leaving I could hear what sounded like a rubbing
under the front end. When I got in it to drive to work the
next day rubbing sound is gone and all is good. Couple
days later and after backing out of the driveway in the
morning and then putting it into drive it starts to go and
then a loud thud sound. After that everything is normal
sounding. Go to the dump a week after the brake job
and rubbing sound comes back and a couple of loud
thuds and jerks then everything fine again. Well first
snow came and I put it into 4WD. Drove great. No noise.
After work I threw it in reverse and backed out, put it
into 2WD and drove home. When I get home I notice my
right front hub cover GONE and the hub has "popped" off
and you can see the guts of it through where it is
separated. Rubbing sound is back with a vengance. I
take it to the brake place immediately and they inform
me it was not a brake issue but by transfer case has a
bad bearing and will probably need replacing.

Question: Did they have to take off the 4WD Hub to put
now rotors on?? If so could they have reinstalled them
incorrectly and this have caused my power train issues???
NEVER any trouble with it before this. EVER!!

First of all, it helps to know what vehicle you are asking about! Second, yes the 4wd hub needs to come off if it is an 04 or earlier. Sounds the the EXPERTS at the brake shop did real good!!! Might want to try a Nissan dealer next time.  How did they determine a problem in the transfer???? Sounds like they are trying to cover their STUPID butts!< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">

Problem Solved. I took it to my dealer and he took off the
4WD hubs to find that the Brake Shop put the retainer clip
on the wrong grove on the drive shaft. This was making
the front wheels think they were in 4WD (hence the
grinding in the transfer case and other noises) Ive brought
the repair bill to the Brake shop and they will be
reimbursing me....stuuuuupid.

I really agree with Frontier guy.  There are just some things that a good dealer does better than anyone else.  Wonder how many Frontiers they ever worked on where you took your truck?  Sure, sometimes you pay more at a dealer but since they focus on the vehicles in question, they have the right experience and the right parts.   I have seen and heard too many stories over the years to make me comfortable with a lot of the independent shops.

Hey Gange...I'm new and stumbled across this forum looking to trouble shoot a loud winding/rubbing around my right front wheel, and knocking when I turn the wheel and drive away from being stopped.  This came about when I did a brake job and rotors on my 2000 Frontier 4x4.  Had to take the hubs, etc.  Since this past snow storm (2 weeks ago) in Long Island, where I was using my 4x4 a lot, the noise has started and has not gone away.

The noise occurs, sometimes, when I start driving forward after backing up and a loud winding/rubbing noise happens and loudens as I speed up.  It goes away when I hold the 4x4 know back like I am going to engage it (while driving) and then let it snap back to 4x2 (or nuetral) where I then hear a loud thump and the winding/rubbing goes away.

Anyone else experience this?  What are the chances that I replace my hubs (@ 250 a pieace from the dealership) that the noise will go away?  Any and All input is welcome.   Thank you ahead of time.
