Thought I'd share my results. I just moved a large safe weighing 800 pounds over a moutainous drive in central PA. The road was, for the most part, 4 lane limited access. The safe rested on a large oak skid weighing about 100 pounds. The tailgate was down as the safe was about 4" longer than the bed. It was held in place with two large ratchet straps attached to the Utilitrak clamps. I kept my speed between 60-65 most of the way and the truck stayed in OD with no strain on hills. The only place I took it out of OD was going up a very steep mountain where I dropped it into third. I unloaded the safe and filled the tank; mileage was 22.0 mpg using 93 octane. Same trip going home empty gave 24.2 mpg on 93 octane.
I was very pleased with the power of the engine and the available torque. Handling the load was a piece of cake. Only thing I noticed was that there was a slight "squat" to the truck from the load which raised my headlights just a bit.

Boomer, I think the secret is 60-65 mph, over that, and mileage drops.

You are right on with that. I rarely drive over 65 mph and I am extremely happy with the mpg I get on a V-6 4WD truck with a heavy frame. I still have the Long Trail tires at 23,000 and they also contribute to the good mileage. They handled my load quite well and it looks like I'll get another 23,000 miles or more out of them. I am a big believer in good maintenance, keeping the vehicles I own at least ten years and shooting for a low cost per mile by driving sensibly and without hammering the vehicle.

Last week I went to Missouri, on my annual deer-chasing trip, and got 22.5 with one tank of gas, the rest was quite a bit worse, right around 20.5. I was cursed with buying RFG (reformulated) gas in most places, though. The "good" gas I bought in St. Charles, MO was from a Shell station, and I got noticeably better mileage with it, in both directions. Louisville's gas is miserable, I'm really lucky to get over 20mpg with it.
I might try some of the Shell stations in Louisville, but I doubt it will help, they all get it from the same supplier/refiner here.
I was burning 93 octane too, when possible. When I got to where I was going, the stations sold only 87 and 89 octane, at the same price!!!! and mileage suffered somewhat. I get better mileage with 93 octane, but the price difference vs. mileage makes it a wash. At least there's more power with 93.

I have to agree with the great MPG. I drove from Sacramento to Medford, Oregon. This was on the interstate highway, about 330 miles over hilly mountains. I kept it under 70 mph, used cruise control on the flat portions, and got 24.8 MPG with the 87 octane. Tires are at 35 PSI, oil changes are done every 3000 miles. I cannot believe it, A 4x4 Long wheelbase crew cab weights almost 5000 pounds getting that MPG??
Who woulda thunk it?
