have 1998 Frontier w/ 4cyl. auto. The engine shudders under light
acceleration. If I press pedal on down or let off completely, it seems to stop
missing. I am getting a code for "cyl. # 1 missfire". I replaced and gaped
plugs,new wires, cap,rotor,fuel injectors cleaned and reinstalled in different
positions,fuel filter changed. with no noticeable improvement. The code is
still popping up. With my timing light on at idle you can watch the #1 plug
miss every once in a while. Its the strangest ignition problem I've ever had.   
My gas mileage is unchanged. .Any ideas??? The truck has 130k in it. Its
totally stock. Im wondering if the distributor could be worn out. Might just
have to see what the dealer can find out. Thanks to all....

Have you tried the distributor cap if it has one?  Could be carbon arcing going on causing the misfire.  Common in old caps.

Yes cap was replaced with rotor and wires. I'm wondering if it could be a
crank angle sensor. I do not have a set of manuals for this vehicle. I'm also
not sure I want to through more parts at it without a good diagnosis. I'm am
blind beyond my OBTII scanner. Thank for the reply......

NTB00-086 provides information on a newly designed distributor and cap with improved venting. Is the inside of your dist covered with a film of dust? If so clean it out and install a GENUINE NISSAN cap and rotor if you don't want to spend the money for the new and improved dist. Are the other parts genuine Nissan or aftermarket???? Possible injector concern or you may want to check the ECU and see if any moisture has entered it.

Thanks for the reply I will go to nissan and get a new cap and rotor the
current ones are after market. When I put the new cap, rotor,wires and plugs
on it didnt even make 3 miles before it started the same misfiring again.
Thats when I pulled the injectors and had them cleaned. The problem is
isolated to the #1 cylinder just off idle. Could this be a problem with the
crank angle sensor? When I had the injectors cleaned they were flow tested
and all came back good. I will also take a look at the ECU. I think its time I
invested in some factory manuals.........

Did you try removing the #1 plug wire at the cap while running to check for a good spark-compared to the other cyls? If you don't want to spend the money for a dist- remove the rotor, inspection plate, clean inside with foaming type glass cleaning or brake cleaner and blow dry completely with compressed air. Most likely you will be replacing the dist. Just replaced one today at work with a (yuk) aftermarket dist.

Thank for all the help. #1 plug has good spark. Removed the valve cover to
look at the cams ect. All was good put new gaskets on and now it at San
Marcos nissan. I hope they have better luck than I did. Yes I agree the
distributor sounds like a good suspect we will see.

Well I got it back from the dealer today. I'm not sure what really transpired
there because I never got to talk to the tech. The service writer clams that
they found a EGR passage in the or near the intake manifold fouled. I
have no Idea how an EGR problem could affect the spark on #1 cylinder. But
as Aircraft Mechanic for almost 20 years I've seen my share of PFM. There
was one thing I thought was funny when getting to the dealer today. I did
see the tech that worked on my truck driving to lunch in his very own 1998
Frontier exactly the same model and year and color as mine..... What are the
olds ... Thanks to all of you for your help............................

It's not a fouled EGR passage. What happens on the KA24DE, three of the EGR passages will become blocked, thus causing one cylinder to get all the exhaust gasses. This creates a hesitation or stumble. All that is needed is to remove the access plugs in the intake manifold and remove the carbon build-up.
