John, I drained my OEM oil in my 2007 V-6 at about 1200 miles and went to Mobil 1 5W-30 with a Nissan filter.  I now have 12000 miles, truck runs great and burns no oil.  I was very fastidious during the breakin period and followed the owners manula recommendations.  Big believer in that.  I think a proper breakin gives engine longeivity.

Lots of good syn oils out there.  Many cars actually come with syn oil from the factory nowadays.  I also changed the rear diff fluid to Mobil 1 after about 5000 miles.  Good idea to do that after breaking in the gear set.  Also did the front diff and transfer case with the proper fluids (see your owner's manual for proper fluids).

Check out www.mototuneusa.com , scroll down to Break in Secrets, good info on proper engine break-in. Written for bikes, but applies to all 4 strokes.
Put Amsoil 5w-30 full synthetic in my 08 frontier @ 3,000 miles, @ 7600 still looking good. Plan on running for a year(about 12,000 miles), supposed to be OK for 15-25,000 depending on type of driving.
Also changed all the other fluids as Boomer stated, good advice!

I've been running Amsoil 5W-30 (please guys, skip the comments that I'm shilling for Amsoil) for the last 85,000 miles in my 05 Frontier. I dig the extended oil change intervals, the fast starting, and the ease with which the engine seems to run.  Because of my comments about other synthetics from Amsoil I've been accused of trying to sell them.  Pay no attention to those comments, I have NOTHING  to do with Amsoil except use it.  I'm a lazy bastard and I don't want to be changing oil every 3000 miles.  Period.  It really keeps the engine clean as well.

Check out this site

Bob Is The Oil Guy - Powered by Motor Oil

Lots of good Amsoil comments and good comments about Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum and other oils.  Really a great way to educate yourself about motor oils.

The only reason I never used Amsoil is their crazy sales system.  It is like Tupperware.  I buy and use Mobil 1 in 5 quart jugs from Wal Mart.  Right now many synthetic oils are in very short supply because Hurricane ike severely damaged the reactors that Exxon Mobil has.  They supply syn base to a lot of other oil companies.
