What makes this D44 rear such an oddball that in the 05 and newer frontier I`ve seen many other D44 with many gear and locker combos

Is it a dana 44?  I thought they came with a c200 (200mm- 7.87" ring gear) which would be a little smaller than a 8.5" ring gear d44 or m226 (226mm-8.98" ring gear) a little bigger than a d44.

... It's probably the same piece of junk they put in the rear of the '99 V-8 Grand Cherokee 4x4 we had. Real D-44's are made of iron and heat treated steel like in my '76 401 V-8 Wagoneer 4x4. Get a magnet and check the housing and tubes... they're probably wimpy aluminum.

They finally build a truck with some power then stick in a differential that won't take it.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Its a D44 "Variant" from what I've heard.

Meaning its made to Nissan's specifications, not Dana's.  From what I understand it isn't like Nissan just buys them complete from Dana without first providing some specs.
