I just bought my 2001 SE-V6 with 110,400 mi on it. The fluids all look good but I want to make the change over to synthetic soon. I can't tell whats been running in the truck so far as the previous owner didn't keep records although it's been well kept.

I read here that some have good luck with Royal Purple products so thats what I'll go with. Or do you recommend Mobil 1?

How many quarts does the transmission/torque converter require on a service? I plan to just buy the parts and have my mechanic do it.

Thanks.

..

SGL1;

I use Wal-Mart 10w-30 Super-Tech full synthetic engine oil in the five quart bottle and save a bundle.

Could not find the capacity of the transmission in the owners manual or Internet

... A simple automatic transmission drain will only replace about five quarts and the filter can be washed. Here is a link on how to drain/change all of the transmission fluid.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

in my chilton's it indicates the amount for a full drain, the other option is to catch the amount you drain in something and measure it, then replace that amount.

I will check my chilton's and get back to ya tomorrow on that total drain number.

if lakota says the filter can be washed, then i'd have to take his word on it, i guess i'm from teh school that if you are going to change the ATF, i'd change the filter as well, because it goes a lot longer than engine oil typically (i  have heard of some that only change the engine oil filter every other oil change)

when you do this tho, you have to make sure you get a kit if you do it yourself, cause have to drop the pan and remove left over gasket and replace it.

I run Royal Purple in my 2.4 and it seems great. I haven't run an analysis on it, but  the engine does feel a little happier.....it better for $50 per oil change!

I can't comment on their AT transmission fluid because I have a manual. I will be switching to RP Manual trans and rear end fluid after I stumble across $60 for it.

What ever you do, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE CORRECT FLUID! You can email RP and they will tell you exactly what you need for your truck. Using the wrong fluid will convert your automatic transmission into a $3000 paper weight.

Frontyfan;

Correct... But in my '99 the only filter was just a wire screen and washable.

My asked my mechanic about it yesterday and he actually advised against the service. He claims to have worked on transmissions for years and said if it's not slipping don't worry about it. But I would think if it's slipping it's too late and that would indicate a more serious problem.

He definitely advised against switching from normal to synthetic in transmissions and also called a transmission shop and got the same advice. I just want to make sure the transmission fluid is clean and read here where others have good results with synthetic.

Have any here switched from normal to synthetic tranny fluid? Results?

If the trans has not been flushed every 30,000 miles, I would drop the pan, clean it, spray the metal screen w/ brake clean, refill, then have it flushed with the fluid of your chioce. Capacity is 9 quarts for the flush(we use 10 qts), for the drain and refill-4-6 qts. needed.
