I dont know where to turn, so i hope someone here has the answer. When i am in either 4 hi or 4 lo, i have been getting stuck in snow very easily.

the back tires spin heavily before the fronts even decide to start moving, its this normal? also the rear locker isnt a true locker it seems. When turned on one tire must spin before the other will start to lock with it. Nothing seems right, i thought that a 4wd drive would make all 4 wheel start going at the same time.

PLease help, i want to take it into the dealer ship but believe they will just say everything is fine when it really isnt.

If you need more clarification on what i am experiencing pleasr email me.

..

trevorg8;

... There are many types of four wheel drive. One of them is Part Time where you have to shift into four wheel and they are equipped with ether manual or automatic front locking hubs.

... There are many types of axle locking systems, some are clutch type Limited Slip Differential, some are electronic ABS systems and some are ’real’ locking systems. The non locking axle set ups will spin the wheels with the least traction front and rear and this is normal. If the front axle does not spin a wheel then A. it‘s not in 4x4 mode and not power to the front axle, B. Both front hubs are not locked or, C. A spline or gear in the drive system has been damaged.

... Some times you can get better traction by lightly applying the brakes.

what model and drive system do you have?

Have a good one.. Don S..

The truck is a 2005 NISMO, the front tires will spin but not till after the back tires would spin for a second, it was un-even ground on snow and ice.

it was weird, the back tire would spin, front would start to chatter and then when i gased it more then the front tire started to spin. normal?

I will take it to dealership but i am sure all they will do is put the truck on the lift and put truck in 4WD and all tires will spin and they will say all OK.

It is a ABLS -- which is a brake managed limited slip.  It is not any kind of mechanical lim. slip.

For reference, my 06 does not do this in the mud/sand (never been in the snow).  It goes like any other 4wd, meaning their is more or less consistent power to the front and rear wheels.

If you beat on it pretty bad offroad (I've heard from several people that the front axle on 05+ Frontiers is relatively weak) than you may have developed an issue.

You could look at it yourself if you want.

Here is a link to the Factory Service Manual: http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/frontier/

if its a pickup truck the rear wheels might spin sooner with an empty ped now there sould not be a dalay front to rear it more than a 1- 3sec u need a service book on the truck u have it could be a bad connection to what engauges you front end now the dealer should fix it do u have the 36000 or 65000 warranty should be covered and no i do`t trust dealers to much after dodge problem happened years ago

i really dont think taking it in will do u any good.  i work at the chevy dealership so i know what there gonna do when they look at the repair order, there gonna laugh because unless they can duplicate the situation they will just say no problem found. and im sure u alreaqdy know this but u have to be in 4 low for the diff lock to activate. also mine has done this at times when the truck is tilted at a weird angle and it felt like it was jolting but what was really happening is the tires were tring to grab.

Yeah, i figured they would put the truck up on thelif and see if the 4 tires rotate. After lots of research i discovered this is normal with open differential, diagonal opposed tires spin when loosing traction. It was snow so there was no traction at all :-)

Am looking for a front locker for the frontier but cant find anything, contacted Arb for a custom application if possible and will have the rear locker modification to be able to lock in 4HI and not only 4LO, possible thinking of just having an Arb locker for the rear which they already make. I like to do alot of 4x4 in the snow here in Big Bear and cant afford to get stuck.

Does your Nismo have the Rear Differential Lock? That's what I have used in similar situations and it works like a charm.
