I have a 2006 2wd SE with the 4.0l engine. My gas milage is not too good. I have added a throttle body spacer, airaid intake, and converted my exhaust to duals, from the CATS back. My gas milage is up to about 18 locally and 22 on the highway. I really expected it to be better than that. Any ideas on how to increase it?

Do you have a manual or automatic? Other than driving like a granny, everything you did is what I would do in your situation. I don't have duals on my truck though, I have a Cherrybomb muffler installed right after the cat with no tail pipe going to the back of the truck. I have a turned down pipe to force the exhaust out the side of my truck so it does not rust my bed out. I went from 22 to about 24-25 just by doing this. The Cherrybomb muffler worked for me, they are pretty cheap, get rid of a lot of back pressure, and I noticed an increase in performance.

They can be kind of loud though, my truck sets off car alarms on a regular basis

Being new around here, and never having heard of a throttlebody spacer, I was wondering if there were any potential negative effects or possible damage on the engine after using such an item.  I've got a 2004 V6 4X4.  I just thought if it added power and/or increased gas mileage, then why isn't it already a part of the manufacturing process on all vehicles?...

Maxbaby;

The problem with most modifications for fuel mileage is ether they don’t work or they cost more than the fuel they save. Reducing the amount of fuel in the fuel-air mix can some times help fuel mileage but too little fuel in the ratio will lose power, mileage and burn valves and pistons.

... If the truck is in good tune and your driving habits are good there are a few things to do for increasing your mileage.

A. Install thinner smooth light weight wheels and tires for better aerodynamics.

B. Air up tires to max pressure rating for less rolling resistance.

C. Clean the truck up aerodynamically I.e. remove roof racks, get smaller outside rearview mirrors and install front air dam to reduce turbulence under the truck.

D. Lighten the weight of the truck an/or the load.

E. Reduce highway speed, more fuel is used to push air out of the way at higher speeds.

... One day while driving on a six lane Interstate with a strong cross wind I saved several gallons. An eighteen wheeler was doing 70 MPH in the middle lane westbound. I dropped two to three car lengths behind him in the outside lane and ’drafted’ him for 40 miles. The instant fuel mileage gauge in our Grand Cherokee jumped from 18 MPG to 40 and more!

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Higher fuel mileage? We need a government study to show the benefits of making ethanol from Marijuana and Agaves plants.

Alas .. Probably be more suicides from those trying to die by exhaust fumes.

I agree with the suggestions you're talking about.  I'm just asking about what, if any, potential problems relating to this throttlebody spacer that everyone is talking about.  It just seems to me that if it were that simple a solution to add a few horsepower and a few mpg, wouldn't it already be done, or at least be widely known that such spacers accomplished this?...

When I read about the airaid product, it talks about creating a "tornado" effect, or spinning the air... I could see that being of value if we all had the traditional throttle body fuel injectors where the fuel is mixed with that air as its spinning.  But that device is installed prior to the intake manifold, which means the air then goes thru the 6 different channels of the manifold and then meets up with the injectors just prior to the valves.  It just seems like any tornado effect would have been negated by the time it makes its way through any one of the six channels of the intake manifold.

Maxbaby;

Yup,... you just answered you own question.  Good thinking!

... The fuel is under pressure and the injectors spray the fuel in a pattern. If that pattern is properly designed a tornado action could reduce the efficiency of the spray pattern.

... The word is you just have to spend the money to find out if it really works. Consumer Reports has tested some of the things and says they don’t work.

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

I put the spacer on first and it really made a big difference on performance. I had a problem then of spinning my tires when I did not want to. I next put the airaid filter system on for the frontier. It felt like I got a little more power and my gas milage went up from about 19 on the highway to 22 on my last trip. I put the same on my son's Xterra and my wife's Altima. Both got about 4 mpg gains. I then put actual dual exhausts on my truck using a 2 in and 2 out FlowMaster 44s. It sounded bad to start with, but after a couple of weeks, sounds much better. It is loud in the cab though. That did not seem to make as much difference as the spacer.

This is where I bought mine from and paid about the same:
