I am towing a 18 foot bass boat that weighs about 2500 lbs. The clutch slips going up the ramp and backing up a slight grade to my boat door in the basement. You can smell the clutch burn odor. Nissan may replace being that it is a 2006 under warranty. The engine is a 4 cyl. with a five speep manual. I have driven staight shifts for over 35 years and once towed a similar sized boat with a 4 Runner 4cyl five speed manual. Any advice or thoughts.

Reply to my own message - Just heard from the Nissan Dealer and they state that the truck will not pull the boat it is too much of a strain backing up and pulling up boat ramps, even though the boat is 2500 lbs., 1000 under the limit. Will be trading this one today, thought I had a good truck to tow the boat based on the manufacturers own information. For others considering this truck for towing, think twice or have a good dealer.

Many truck manufacturers (ie the American brands) don't really give an option to have a stick shift for this very reason. Most want you to tow and pull with an automatic as the torque multiplication occurs in the torque converter with fluid, not a dry clutch that rubs two faces together. No matter what you buy, get an automatic with the towing package that includes an automatic transmission fluid cooling radiator mounted in front of the truck's radiator to provide for extra and needed fluid cooling. Even though I no longer tow, I won't buy a truck without this feature.

I would second that, when doing regular towing that having either a truck with the towing package (nowadays, usually seems to include a secondary tranny cooler) or adding an aux tranny cooler is a helpful addition.
What angle is the boat ramp? that would be a factor to think about as well. however, the weight of the trailer is a vital factor as well. trailers vary, as i know the flatbed we own is over 1000 lbs, but it is very very sturdy and used to tow and offroad toy. i would guess that a trailer for a boat would probably be at the very least 500lbs (lol i'm sure that's super super conservative) to over 1000 lbs, that being the case it would put you over the 3500 lb tow rating for a 2006 XE with the QR25.
www.nissanhelp.com you can find the information there about tow ratings. the King Cab VQ40 4x2 has the largest tow rating of the Frontier family for 2006 at 6500 lbs. Sorry to hear that your truck isn't working for your needs on towing.

I included the weight of the trailer with the motor and the boat. The boat is 1125, trailer 1000 and motor 315. I just came back from the dealer and they said to bring it by with the boat and they would test it. There comment was that "It is a four cyl." I expressed to them that the 3500lb figure was theirs not mine and the purchase of the truck was based upon tow capacity.

I'm considering purchasing a new 18 ft. bass boat next spring and have figured that the boat will have a curb weight of approx. 4200 lbs. Would it be recommended that I purchase a trailer with surge-brakes?

Yes, get the surge brakes! You want a trailer of that weight to have some braking control. Not only does it help save the brakes on the tow vehicle, it is SAFER! Also, make sure that the brakes stay operable over time. Immersion of the brakes in water during launch and recovery can cause corrosion of parts, sometime severe, over time. This can render the brakes inoperative! Always rinse down the trialer after use and keep pivot points well lubed. An aluminum based grease for boat trailers is the best. Don't count on lithium grease to do the job.

That is of course assuming the trailer does not have an electric brake option. I guess that would be unlikely for a boat trailer though.

the clutch is your problem. i had a 2001 frontier 2.4 4x2 (meaning less hp/tq than your 4cyl) and it would tow ~2000lbs no problem, no hiccups, no anything....
my current truck (06 v6 4x4) will tow that same ~2000lbs like it isn't even there.
