The New 4.0 2007 Nismo Frontier was purchased partially because it had one of the better towing capacities in its class.  The one I got also had a nice neat tow package already installed from the factory. I also could never seem to rationalize gettting a full size truck for what I generally do.  I hope that was not a mistake on this go round.  I will be towing a 4500 lb travel trailer about 7 times a year for an average round trip of 350 miles each time.

A couple questions:  How are the new 4.0 engines handling this type of load?  Should I have tried to find the truck in a manual (I got an AT).  How was the track record for the older 3.7 Six Cylinder motors for towing.  Wasnt this new motor just put out in 2005?

thanks,

tim

Well congrats on your new truck, as far as towing capacity on the newer ones, I haven't heard anyone really complain about it. My brother had an 05 KC Fronty with the new VQ engine and he used it to tow his off road toy which is an older cherokee stuffed full of stuff and also his 33" tires in the back of it. Those old cherokees are tanks and weigh over 3000 lbs not to mention all teh stuff in it. It was on a 1000 lb trailer that he has and it apparently in his opinion didn't have any problems towing it. So with that in mind you should be ok. Others with this newer truck can give you better idea tho..that's just information I have. The older engine you speak of, was a 3.3 not a 3.7, nissan hasn't had a 3.7 in recent history in the US as far as I know or ever for that matter. (please correct me if i'm wrong, someone) I wouldn't have any information on that, but you could check the towing/hauling section here to get an idea about the older, and even the newer engines.

However I would suggest, even tho you aren't going to be doing a lot of towing, that a possible investment might be made into an aux tranny cooler to help protect your tranny while towing as well as just day to day driving. I've heard several people say that it is worthwhile.

Oh, you are right.  I meant 3.3 not 3.7.  I will examine possible add-on help for the AT tranny as you mention.  I think I should have got a manual..... but I am not sure.  I could find myself in traffic rather often, so the AT is fine.  That was the one thing I struggled over the most, and still do.  The AT was on the lot in the color and package I liked so I took it.

I haven't towed much over 3000lbs, but you should have no trouble towing a 4500lbs. From what I've read of others towing, it seems that the auto tranny might be a little better. Some with the manual have said that starting on inclines with heavier trailers that had no trailer brakes was a pain. They have also said that since the reverse on the manual is pretty high reversing can be a pain, especially if you have to back your trailer over a curb.Just remember it's not advised to use overdrive on the auto tranny while towing.
