I have read the discussions in the other sections here, and the specs on what Nissan says this vehicle will tow, but will it tow home restorable VWs (beetles, ghias, busses, no junk like rabbits...) and haul dirt for home projects?

Absolutely!  I tow a '72 Datsun 240Z... car weighs 2300 lbs + trailer.  Last I checked, a type one was in the neighborhood of 1600 lbs, depending on year.

Just use a Class 3 hitch or higher... a Class 3 is good to 5000 lbs.  If you go with the weight distributing hitch you can take it to the max Nissan states... which I think yours is 6300... check your manual.

As far as payload for dirt and what not... I recently hauled 1.5 cubic yards of mulch in the bed which fills it just about level.  The truck sat about level.  Make no mistake about it, these trucks are indeed trucks and will take pretty much anything you can throw at 'em.  Remember... Nissan brought the first compact truck to America, they've pretty much perfected it in the last 45+ years!

Awesome! I do have the factory installed hitch with a class III setup. It may not be able to tow a bus, though, as it weighs 3500 - unless I use a tow dolly?

I am glad to hear the truck can handle the job. I feel as I made the right choice - I didn't want to buy a full size, but needed some of the capabilities.

Are you intending to flat tow the Type 2?  You probably could do it for a short distance, but you really should use a dolly or trailer equiped with either surge brakes or electric brakes.  Your Class 3 hitch will limit you to 5,000 lbs but at that weight you could put a Type 2 on a dolly and tow cross country and back without the Frontier breaking a sweat.  If you go with a weight distributing hitch your Class 3 is good for 6,000 lbs, I believe.?.  U-Haul's double axle car carrier tips the scales at 2000 lbs, a little over built really, plus a Type 2 equals 5,500 lbs.  The benefit of the weight distribution hitch will allow you to not only bump up the combined weight but also level out the rearend of the truck... a big bonus, especially if you have an extra pancake motor and a transaxle hanging out in the bed.

Here's a little info on the WD Hitches... http://www.etrailer.com/faq_weightdistribution.aspx  .

Edit:  Also here is a link to the Nissan Tow Guide, 2006 but it still applies...

Thanks for the info on the towing! I was thinking of flat bedding the type 2.....I think the nissan is capable, so long as I change the tow hitch set up? Sounds like you've towed VWs before! LOL!

as an added suggestion just to protect the tranny (tho i'm not saying it necessarily needs it, just as an added protection for your investment), you might want to think about an aux tranny cooler if you are going to be doing a lot of towing regularly. but as far as towing, no problems there, my brother towed a jeep cherokee with lots of extra stuff in it and tools as well as 33" tires stuffed inside on a 1000lb trailer and he said he was surprised at how well the 4.0L V6 towed it like a champ, that was when he used to own frontier
