I sit close to the steering wheel in my 02 Crew Cab, and would like to have the airbag removed. Obviously most people would just move the seat further back, but it's not comfortable for me, and I don't like the thought of an exploding bag rushing up to kiss me should I hit something.

So, does anyone know the procedure for having a qualified mechanic (dealership, most likely) remove it? Is it costly?

Thanks for any thoughts or advice!

Good luck with that one.  Unless you find a local shop to do it, I don't think a dealership would do it all unless you sign a waiver.

Your best bet would be to get an aftermarket steering wheel

I called a few local dealers and spoke to the service guys. They said naturally they wouldn't do anything like that, it's illegal, blah blah blah.  My friend said not to worry about it so much, so I won't. But the idea of an aftermarket s.wheel intrigues me...

Is the thought of being slammed into a non-squishy steering wheel and possibly being impaled by the steering collumn more comforting?

Here's a little thought for you... your truck is designed to act a certain way in the event of a collision.  The airbag is an intricate part of that design.  These trucks are not designed like the trucks from back in the day that would slam into things and limp home.  Even minor collisions will render them undriveable.  The seatbelt pretensioners tighten up to keep the occupants in place, the front end and fenders will fold up like an accordian while at a specific momment in time the airbag will deploy... all to lessen the effects of the impact on your body.  A smart man would not screw with this system.  Leave it alone.  The old rule of thumb for seating positions is to sit with your shoulder blades touching the seat and stick both arms out towards the wheel... your wrists should be able to rest on top of the wheel.

Also, I'm pretty sure that should you remove or otherwise disengage the airbag that the warning light on the dash will stay on indefinetly.
