According to the manual "The knock sensor detects abnormal vibration (spark knock or pinging in the engine. The knock control system is designed to reduce spark knock during periods of heavy detonation. This allows the engine to use maximum spark advance to improve drive-ability. Knock sensors produce an AC output voltage which increases with the severity of the knock. The signal is fed into the PCM and the timing is retarded to compensate for the sever detonation."

Depending on whether it is a 4 or 6 the locations are for the 4 cyl on the side of the block below the intake manifold. 6 cyl sensors are located underneath the intake manifold in the middle of the block.
Checks are as follows: "Disconnect the electrical connector from the knock sensor. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the knock sensor terminal 2 (Pathfinder) or terminal 1 (Frontier/Xterra) and a good engine ground point. The resistance should be between 500 to 620 K-ohms at 77 degrees F (25-degrees C). If the resistance is very high replace the sensor."

I believe if the resistance is within the range start looking at the fuel you are using. Also I'd pull the plugs and see what they are telling you.
Check for Vacuum leaks, lean condition. Vacuum hoses that may be cracked?
