Here is a Chinese American Menu Autographed in 1938 for
my Mother. I wish I could post the readable copies but
the original scans of the front and back were readable
but were 5000 pixels wide and 14 MB. I reduced them to
800 pixels and 360 KB for quicker Internet loading. There
is a lot of hand written Morris code and characters. The
code says Steak Night. Sorry to say that I can not read
what he wrote in Chinese
As best I remember I ate there the day the menu was
signed. This was perhaps the finest place to eat on the
Island… If not the world.
Have a good one.. Don S..

The Kau Kau Korner was located at the intersection of
Kalakaua Ave. and Kapiolani Boulevard. One of the first
words I learned as a young Kanaka was Kau Kau,… it is
Hawaiian for food. We ate there often and it was on my
mothers way to work. The prices on the menu were higher
than those on the mainland at the time but every thing
tasted better in the Islands.
Unfortunately I only have the upper two thirds of the
front of the menu scanned and the original is buried in
an antique steamer trunk. I would be nice to know if the
Kau Kau Korner is still in business. Feed back will be
appreciated!
I have also scanned a 1934 street map of Honolulu in
three parts. Each is about 2.4 Mg as scanned and street
names are very legible. I was born in a house at 3844
Leahi Ave. over looking Waikiki Beach, Kapiolani Park and
the Polo field. I spent a lot of time in the park and
beach. I wonder if the park and polo field are still
there or covered over with hotels? Again, feed back will
be appreciated!
Have a good one.. Don S..

Dear Lakota,
I am from the South China Morning Post and we are running
a story on
Richard Halliburton and his wonderful adventures,
including his last
adventure on the Sea Dragon. Would I be able to use any
of the images that
you have in your possession to illustrate the story for
our Post Magazine?
Please email me on antony.dickson@scmp.com
Thank you!
Thank you for your interest. Permission
granted. E-mail sent.
Updates on the article would be appreciated. Don S..

There have been many Dairy’s producing milk in
Hawaii over the years. There were problems with diseased
cows. Many Hawaiians were afraid to drink the milk. The
Dairy’s had to promote their products as being safe.
Here is a clipping of a news paper advertisement from
about 1938.
I was four years old but still remember the
bottle of milk the day my mother took many photos that
were made for the add. Would you believe the milk in the
bottle was actually Pet brand condensed milk. I wondered
if the Dairy company was still in business so I tried
goggling the company but no luck.
Now, some 70 years later here I am with my Great
Grandson. I am wearing my ’Santa Fe Super Chief’ uniform
I wore in 1955. We are over looking our N-Scale model
railroad.
BTW This forum is getting touchy about the size of photos
and file name size.
Have a good one.. Don S..

More 80 year old photos from 1938
One of my memories from the Hawaiian Islands that stuck with me my whole life (and I aint quite dead yet but close) is the Oahu railway’s camera
trains. Operating and working on trains was a passion. My first job after leaving home was with the Santa Fe Rail Road.
My Mother took many thousands of pictures and among them are many of the Oahu Railway Camera train. She took me on these trains two or three
times. There were 3 foot (narrow) gauge tracks from Honolulu around the western shore and up to the northeast corner. There were tracks going to
half way up the valley. There were branch lines for sugar cane and pineapple plantations.
The Oahu Railway served Pearle Harbor and several bases on the island and was an asset during WW-II. The trains ceased operation in 1948.
I may have more trains than brains but I have a good
train of thought.. Don S..

More 80 year old photos from 1938
In later years besides working on trains I took movies of trains and sold hundreds of copies. Some of these movies are becoming a recording of history themselves already...
Next comes the Hula Girls photos.. Don S..

The Hawaiian Hula Girls
These sweet hearts are now nearly 100 year old.
In the 1930s some rural areas Oahu still had some of the Hawaiian flavor prior to the U. S. government taking over (absconding) the well established
benevolent kingdom. When the Pacific Fleet was assigned to Pearl Harbor many new white workers flooded the Island changing the culture.
The Hawaiian hula was basically a rather slow rhythm dance telling stories of the Islands. This was in contrast to the Samoan girls that shook their hips at a
very fast rate.
Next... 1938 Hawaiian freight trains

The three foot narrow gauge trains serving 1938 Honolulu
In the time before the Westinghouse air braking system was put in service brakemen had to set and release the brakes on each car if needed.
The Westinghouse air system is strange at first glance. The engineer reduces air pressure on the train brake line then pistons on each car gets
pressure to apply the brakes on the cars. Have fun figuring out how it is done!
Some old time brakemen carried boxes to sit on when riding on top of through freight trains. The old locomotives could not stop the whole train behind them
in a timely manor. The heavily loaded trians, or longer or steeper grades would require more brakemen on top to help slow or stop the trains.
Jimmy Rogers sang about trains but he didn't sing about the Rock & Roll the trainmen had to live with! From my experience these old box cars when heavily
loaded at 35 plus mph would bounce and sway to the point where the brakemen had to lay down on the cat walk and hang on for dear life. And that
was on good modern standard gauge track! At 55 mph you will really take a beating!
BTW… Don’t ask how I know!
High balling down the track.. Don S..
