Hey All:
I just purchased a 1998 Frontier. Yesterday I got 23.5 on my first tank and the second is looking like around 20. These were both highway miles, but the first I tried to stay between 65-68 and the second I kept at just over 70 mph.
I am wondering about mods for fuel mileage. I have read alot of posts on cat back exhaust systems and CAI's for power, sound, etc, but relatively little on fuel efficiency effects. I checked out the Banks Monster Exhaust but it's only for newer Frontiers. Anyone out there with an older Frontier besides Lakota? I have some experience with cars, but not a ton so I'm hoping to turn this into a project but still keep it relatively driveable. So, any advice on tires, intakes, exhaust, etc. to improve mileage is greatly appreciated. Also, since it's a new truck to me anything to look out for maintenance-wise would be great too.
Thanks all.

Hey guys:
Sorry, I've got a 2.4 L. I have heard good things about switching to full synthetic to up gas mileage, so I might try that. Any reports?
Also, what do you mean by muffler swap?

Danny here the 2.4 I`ve heard very good about to. The syntheic oil should and rember you can go 5000mi instead of 3000 of regular oil. The muffler swap if you have a good muffler shop cut of the old muffler and swap in a good free flow muffler like a dynomax, flowmaster, flowtech cherry bomb has some cool stuff out to. many people like cat backs but if money is tight a good free flow can help also go no more than a 1/4 larger pipe and muffler

GSanders,
I have a 2000 King Cab 2.4L 4cyl I have some bigger tires and i have a Gibson Cat Back exhaust which is awesome btw! but I am getting about 25-26 MPG the last 3 times i have had to fill up. When i just change my oil i use regular chevron 10W-30( i think) and a Fram oil filter. The gibson exhaust was all bolt on and took me about 15 min. Hope your MPG's improve!

Take it back to the dealer and have the dealer verify the engine is in proper timing. Friend of mine here had same problem, 10 - 11 mpg and it was an issue with the idler pulley was loose and altho one bank was in timing with the crankshaft, the other was not, it had jumped timing. Now, my friend is geeting 19 mpg again without any problems. Paul

I have a 2006 King Cab Frontier with the 2.5 Four and manual transmission. I finally had the op to put it to some highway milage last week. About 600+ miles round trip from Houston to Ft. Worth mostly Interstate. Used the cruise control as much as possible and filled just before and after the trip. Averaged 23.16 mpg Had hoped for more. Last year in city driving it averaged 22 mpg for the year. (ya I track every fillup and cost, it helps me to notice when a tuneup is in order). Truck has 31,000 mi on it and needed a good trip to get it hot. Wish it had been better.

Boy, sounds like the 4 cyl isn't much better than the 6. My truck has the 3.3L V6 (unfortunately isn't supercharged :() with a 5spd manual. I bought her with just over 80k 4 months ago, have put 9k miles on her, and she gets 21.75mpg highway with 17.5-18 (depending on how hard I push her) city. I used to commute 38.1 miles 1 way to/from work, and now I deliver pizzas, so, faily consistent records. Also, I change my oil 2500 miles when city driving, 5000 highway driving. Also, the tires were changed to 265/75/15 from previous owner. (apparently wider but smaller than stock? or at least the spare anyway)

i have an o1' and i get about the same. it makes me feel like crap to know that my buddys mustang GT gets better gas mileage and he has the pedal to the metal everywhere.
also keep in mind that it is a small V6 and that it is hard for it to get out of its own way
