I've explained the best I can that the radiator is NOT
used to prewarm the ATF. On a really cold day at IDLE
the engine doesn't produce much heat, the cooling
system, water pump, thermostat, fan and radiator, is
sized for when the engine is running near full load in
a 100-120F ambient. If it wasn't you wouldn't be able
to drive across death valley.

At idle on any day the thermostat will be almost
closed and there will be little coolant flow in the
radiator. The fan will still move air across that HUGE
radiator even though it's coupling will be at it's
lowest coupling. Remember radiator was designed for
going across the HOT desert. The top tank of the
radiator will be near the temperature of the engine
but the bottom tank, NEWS FLASH, will be near ambient
temperature. That's how it works.

If you are going to follow the procedure in the
Service Manual you can't check the trans fluid on this
transmission WITHOUT an ODBII reader anyway. Checking
it cold is just a prelude to actually checking it when
it's warm after the truck has been driven. If you
don't do this final step the trans can be WAY
overfull.

If you plan on keeping your Frontier for as long as
possible, disconnecting the cooler in the radiator is
a good choice.

Best to get yourself an obdII scanner to show ATF
Temp, if you are going to check the trans fluid
yourself, but I've explained it the best I can to help
you.

It's Your Truck, so do as you deem best.

Good Luck
