Instillation:

1. Install the grease catcher on the axle shaft.

2. Install the wheel studs through the grease catcher
into the axle shaft using a suitable press.
NOTE: All six wheel studs must be pressed on at the
same time and are flush with the grease catcher when
installed.

I pressed them in two at a time. Probably better if
you can mount it to do all at the same time. I didn't
have this in front of me at the time. Much easier to
do this first.

3. Position the axle bearing on the back plate and
torque member.

It only fits two ways due to the asymmetrical bolt
pattern.

4. Install the axle bearing studs using a suitable
press to attach the axle bearing to the back plate and
torque member.
NOTE: Always replace the axle bearing with a new one.

You will need a pipe nipple or something to put over
the stud as you push it in. Also the way the bearing
hub is made you will need something on top of it as
well. I used a couple of sockets, deep well over the
stud and a regular one to push on ith with.

5. Install the back plate and torque member, new axle
bearing and new bearing ring retainer on the axle
shaft using a suitable press.
Tool number : KV40106500 (J-45073) LDIA0031E
Maximum press load “P1” : 98 kN (10 ton, 11.0 US
ton, 9.8 Imp ton)

CAUTION:Press the new bearing ring retainer on the
axle shaft with the taper side positioned as shown.
(mine: one side of the outer edge is tapered. It is
installed away from the bearing. The flat side is
towards the bearing.)

NOTE:Always replace the bearing ring retainer with a
new one.


Now you will need the 2"X4" pipe nipple (available at
Home Depot for about $6) and one of the parts from the
ball joint installing press. Use the pipe nipple
between the press plates and the bearing retainer that
you will be pushing against. Use the ball joint press
part on top of the axle.

I only used on section of the press handle to limit
the force I pushed with.

6. Select the correct size shim washer.

Select the size of shim washer so that the installed
snap ring to shim washer clearance is within
specification.
Snap ring to shim washer clearance : 0.2 mm (0.008 in)
or less

I could not insert a 0.008" feeler gauge between the
shim washer and the snap ring. So I accepted it as
passed.

7. Install a new snap ring on the axle shaft.
Do not over spread the snap ring when installing,
measure the outer diameter of the snap ring after
installation and replace if the snap ring outer
diameter exceeds specification.
NOTE:Always replace the snap ring with a new one.

Snap ring outer diameter installed : 47.5 mm (1.87 in)
maximum

Be really careful. It will go on and be fine. Just
measure to be certain.

8. Check the snap ring to shim washer clearance,
repeat steps 7 and 8 as necessary until the installed
snap ring to shim washer clearance is within
specification.

I could not insert the feeler gauge.

9. Perform break-in rotation of the wheel bearing.
a. Rotate the wheel bearing in the forward direction
for a minimum of 10 revolutions at 50-70 RPM.
b. Rotate the wheel bearing in the reverse direction
for a minimum of 10 revolutions at 50-70 RPM.

Gave it a good spin in both directions.

10. Measure the rotational torque of the wheel
bearing.

Rotational speed 8-12 RPM
Rotational torque 1.8 N·m (0.18 kg-m, 16 in-lb)

I did not measure. It wouldn't be that hard but it was
so smooth and easy to move compared to before I was
happy.

11. Inspect that the wheel bearing is free from axial
play relative to the axle shaft.

You'll need the dial indicator for this. I could
detect less than 0.0005" of end play. Well within the
spec.

12. Install a new ABS sensor rotor on the axle shaft
using a suitable press.

CAUTION: Press the new ABS sensor rotor on the axle
shaft with the notch side positioned as shown. (mine:
It's obvious how this is installed. There is a also a
recess for the snap ring.)

NOTE: Always replace the ABS sensor rotor with a new
one.

You will need the 2" X 4" Pipe Nipple again.

13. Install the new axle seal into the axle case using
Tool as shown.
After installing the new oil seal, coat the sealing
lip with oil.
Install the new oil seal with the seal facing outwards
and the so that the seal is fully seated in the axle
case.

The seal comes with grease on it for lubrication. I
generally use grease rather than oil to lubricate seal
faces.

You will need a 50mm seal driver at least for this.

If you install backwards it will be very hard to
remove it in the future.

14. Apply multi-purpose grease to the recess of axle
case end as shown.

Put some grease on everything that will be the cavity
when the hub is bolted on. You only need a light
coating.

15. Apply gear oil to the spline of axle shaft. Coat
the axle oil seal surface of axle shaft with multi-
purpose grease as shown.

You will see the area where the seal rubs on the axle.
Put a coating of grease on it.

16. Insert Tool into the new axle oil seal as a guide.
CAUTION: When inserting axle shaft, be careful not to
damage oil seal.
NOTE: The split ends of the Tool must butt up together
and not overlap as shown.

This tool inserted into the seal and keeps the shaft
from rubbing on it as you install the shaft into the
axle housing. The shaft is very long. I made a tool by
cutting out a plastic milk container which is what I
always do.

17. Insert the axle shaft assembly. Tighten the axle
shaft nuts evenly in a criss-cross pattern to
specification.
Remove the Tool (made from the milk container) when
the axle shaft assembly is approximately 90% inserted
to protect the new axle oil seal. (it will be obvious
when it's time to remove it.)

18. Install the parking brake assembly on the back
plate and torque member. Refer to PB-6, "Removal and
Installation" .

19. Install the rear brake caliper assembly. Refer to
BR-30, "INSTALLATION" .

20. Install the ABS wheel sensor into the axle case.
Refer to BRC-36, "WHEEL SENSORS" (ABS), BRC-80,
"WHEEL SENSORS" (ABLS/ABS), BRC-147, "WHEEL SENSORS"
(HDC/HSA/VDC/TCS/ABS).

When I figure out how to upload photos I'll do some
more.

wonderful, I am now going to do the same procedure on my 06, picts would be wonderful. I don't have a shop or even a garage, so I'm going to try to use a machine shop somewhere around here, do I have to replace the abs wheel sensor, wasn't planning to, nor snap,washer, Nissan parts guy said to use old. will oil leak out when doing this?
could you send me your picts ? I would greatly appreciate them

Thanks for the post; both the description of the process
and the pictures were certainly helpful. I'm about to
attempt this repair myself, but I want to swap out the
torque member and I'm unable to find it while looking
through a local nissan dealers online parts store. Do
you know where you sourced that part for your repair?

I bought a new back plate and my recollection is the
torque member is spot welded to the back plate.

I believe the current part numbers are:
44030-EA070 or 44030-EA080 Brake Splash Guard. Plate
Back, Brake. (Left, Rear)

and
44020-EA070 or 44020-EA080 Brake Splash Guard. Plate
Back, Brake. (Right, Rear).

They have gone up in price from 76 to 110 since I did
this.

thanks, this guide was really helpful! saved a bundle
since several mechanics and the nissan service center
said they were unable to replace just the wheel bearing

I have about 108K on the truck now. Have already
replaced both front hubs which were bad and still had
some grinding noise and wheer and was fairly sure it
