Hey guys instead of arguing about about which transmission is better and cursing up a storm about it; why don't we try to help Tony (the guy who started this thread) with his problem.  Tony I also have a manual and would like to know if you get a solution.  A transmission mechanic or as a last resort a dealer mechanic might be able to help.  I have not towed anything substantial yet, but I would like to know if there is a flaw in our trucks or if yours is a unique case.

It appears my post has gotten out of hand.  It was not my intention to start a post that opened a debate about which is better.  I was just curious in to see if anyone else has had this problem.  I have contacted my dealer since its under warranty and they said that they could put the truck on the computer but more than likely they would not find anything wrong with the truck. I have talked to other mechanics that are friends of mine and they havent seen a problem such as this either.

I have a 2001 V6 Frontier King Cab.  It has a manual transmission and I have gone over the manual weight recommendations many times. I live on a farm and routinely haul the big bales of hay on a trailer.  I also pull our boat with it.  I have not had the problems that you experienced.  It likes to take it's time going up steep hills, but otherwise it seems to go OK.  You are not using the highest (overdrive) gear when hauling are you?  Mine is a 5 speed, but when hauling I use 4th gear as the highest gear.

actually the xtronic cvt is a very interesting trans it offers the manual mode and auto. i drove a 2007 nissan maxima this is standard on all 2007 model maximas and when you put her to the floor in auto mode it revs to 6000 rpm and stays there it is very smooth and the speedometer rolls on up to 130 very quick when you put it in the xtronic mode it acts just like a manual and when you shift it it will jerk your neck back in the seat and by 2010 all nissan vehicles will have this or something better.

2001 Frontier v6 manual 4wd King cab.

We are looking at buying a new travel trailer and so I got out the owners manual to see what the upper limit was for the truck.  I was surprised to see a recommended limit of 5000# for the auto but only 3500# for the manual.  Is the darn thing that delicate?  I know that I have exceeded this - I use the truck on a farm and haul trailers full of the big round hay bales and it has pulled those fine.  Could it be a danger of burning out the clutch?

Just curious if anyone knew what the weak link in the drive train is for the manual.

Also is any additonal cooling needed for long trips?

My truck works harder in the local sand pits than it does pulling full size chevy's off the beach. Hitting the dunes, I smelled my clutch pretty good.
As far as the towing up hills thing, I pulled a PT cruiser up a pretty good grade with no difficulty. I'm no authority on towing for any sort of distance, though.

I would like to find out because I'll be towing a boat quite a bit in the future (cuz i'm getting one) and this could be useful info for my 6-speed.

the 5 speed automatic is a great trans it memorizes the way you drive and it shifts faster than any person can shift a manual  YES ANYONE EVEN A PRO it shifts very fast and there is no delay actually its like a cvt the rpms stay at say 2500 it shifts and keeps that rpm does not rise or decline rpm no speed loss at all and a manual you are gonna lose speed everytime you push in that clutch.

i own a 20 foot tandem axle parker heavy duty trailer i purchased when doing hurricane relief work in new orleans now that trailer is a solid 10000 lb trailer it weighs about 3500 lbs dry. i hook up to that and i put a big kubota L3410 farm tractor on that which weighs about 2800 lbs with a 1500 lb finishing mower attatched to that that is about 7800 lbs that i pull with this truck now i live in mississippi with lots of hills and i pull it from picayune to poplarville that is about 30 miles one way with up and down hills i turn off overdrive and do not pull over 70 mph and doing 70 it turns 2600 rpms on flat ground and the cool thing about this trans is it dont downshift to the lowest gear and all that bs when i go to climb a hill it will rev like a slipping trans depending on how the hill is is how high it will rev climbing these hills it revs to 3100 and holds it does not downshift because it is tuned to rev not downshift to stay in the torque range and it pulls this weight like it aint sh*t do that with a manual and the clutch will need replacing after that haul espesially all the downshifting you will be doing in it and the auto is the same trans as the titan and that will pull 10000 lbs so that weight aint hurting the trans  and a manual is not made to pull anyway.

Awesome. only problem is I'm not towing the whole farm behind my truck. I pull cars out of holes in the beach maybe once a month, a light boat now and then. I like the manual. And if manual is sooooo bad for towing, why do so many tow trucks and semis have manual trans?
