Finally.. after four trips to the Nissan dealership they fixed my rigg. Is running great.. but I will keep you guys posted.. and I will monitor it.. After reading all the issues I cannot afford to let anything go.
For all the newbies..
If you feel your steering gets hard at times, is not a controlled issue. There is something wrong with the bearings on the steering column. The dealership has to replace the steering column and align the truck. Make sure they do it all at the same time to avoid multiple trips to the dealership. Make sure they give you a rental, if you have the extended warranty it's covered, read your policy, keep records of all the paperwork and all the phone calls you make in case you need to take legal action.
Specially if later on this be a class action law suit

I too was one of the unlucky ones to have my steering column go out with only 2,200 miles on my Frontier. I towed it to the dealer and although I did not have the extended warranty plan they were nice enough to lend me a rental car at their expense. They indicated that there were quite a few other Frontiers with the same problem and reassured me that Nissan R&D is working on the situation, telling me that my faulty steering column was to be immediately shipped off to the lab and that somehow I was contributing to the R&D efforts. Needless to say, I did not feel as lucky as they wanted me to feel; my brand-new truck has problems. And like many others have experienced, the parts needed were of course not in at the time which ended up leaving with without my truck for five days. The steering column was replaced, with what I do not know--newly-designed, better parts or the same faulty steering column (I cannot get a straight answer out of Nissan)--and the truck is driving like it did when I first pulled off the lot last month. Well, that is, until yesterday when they brake fluid lamp began to flash... So it's Labor Day weekend and the maintenance department is closed today and tomorrow. I can't drive my brand-new truck and I'll have to miss part of my day of work on Tuesday morning because according to the manual I should not be driving it. Nissan said that unfortunately there is little that they can do for me and that my situation is unfortunate. I told them, like many of you might have, that maybe I should have bought a Toyota. They want their MPG but I all I want my truck to get to at least it's first oil change without breaking down a third time! Is that too much to ask?

I feel you pain! I started this thread with 3000 mile on mine. Like yours mine went out in a holiday weekend. Nissans Customer Service is horrible. For wht it's worth, my part was replaced with the same junky P.O.S. as the original. My dealer told me that was all they could do until there is a recall, and they can buy from another vendor with a better part. Sorry to hear about your trouble. Good Luck!

Thanks, Mike. I'm sorry that you and so many others are having these problems with their Frontiers. As for myself, I don't feel very comfortable knowing that my steering column can give out at anytime and it makes me incredibly nervous especially while driving on the freeway or taking my truck on a long-distance trip.. It sounds like your truck was "fixed" with the same part which makes me wonder about my own. I guess that we have to wait until the cost of the recall becomes less than the cost of replacing our lives for anything to happen. Pardon my cynicism. Mike, perhaps you or someone else who knows a little more about steering columns and exactly how and when they typically break can tell me what to expect? When do steering columns give out and are there any signs of it slipping? And if these signs do show their ugly faces again will Nissan fix it or do I have to wait until I'm stuck on the side of the road again?
Stranded in Socal on a holiday weekend,
Cory

My first signs were these
1. The sterring wheel would move up and down and make a clicking sound.
2. At various points in one revolution (Turning the Wheel) it would feel as though the power steering would go out (Hard To Turn). Then turning another way it would feel ok, then back to sticking. What is really happening is that a flat spot develops on the bad part and that is where you feel the sticking or resistance..

I retract my statement about my 06 Nismo Crew acting like it was swerving in the wind. I retraced my drive and it was grooves in the road.

All, can we take the Frontier=Good/Bad debate to another part of the site? We've got lots of good info on this problem coming in and my interest in reading the thread is limited to the steering column issue.
You all know what they say about opinions.... just express in another thread.
Thanks!

We were contacted by the NHTSA today. They are gathering information based on the steering complaints of myself and others. If you have had the problem and have service paperwork from the repair, this may be a good person to contact.

Hey all -
I'd also like to report the problem on my 06 CC - 7000 Kms last fall; failed while I was a LONG way from home on a weekend (Ft. Mcmurray anyone) and because it was a long weekend the fools at the towline told me I would be on the hook for the towing to the closest depot (600 Kms!). They failed to mention it would be free if it was a warranty issue.
Started by a wobble in the steering wheel (front to back) that would occur at different spots; we stopped for lunch and thought not much of it. After chow proceeded to have it bind on me in an intersection - forcing me to piss off alot of people as I was forced to back up out of a left hand turn. From what we could tell it seemed as if it was similar to having a U-joint lose a pin - and therefore having the pin bind at certain posititions within the sealed column.
I was beyond pissed and ended up having a friend drive all the way up to tow me back with a car dolly. About the only positive thing that came of the experience is I found an _excellent_ service department that knows exactly what the name implies (in Edmonton, Sherwood Nissan). The guys told me it was the first they had seen; the parts would be a month; and ended pulling a column out of a new unit (to my understanding).
Let me know if anyone needs any information regarding this in a suit - I'll forward my documentation.

Yikes, I was just getting ready to plunk down some money to order an '07, but now I'm concerned. Does anyone know if they've changed the column for '07? Maybe if I send an e-mail directly to Nissan stating that I'm holding off on placing an order due to peoples' concerns, it might light a fire under their collective hiney.
P.S. I agree with the person who asked that this thread be restricted to discussing the topic of the thread rather than two people bashing each other.
