I have an '04 4runner that does the same thing just not as dramatic as my '06 Frontier.

I read an article in Popular Mechanics about someone complainting about another truck doing that.  The explaination was the drive shaft shifting during acceleration.  Not sure if that was the cause or not.  I also thought it could be a transmission fail-safe that maybe prevents shifting into reverse after a certain speed?

people weren't saying "uh its probabaly normal"

nissan says if you have ABLS then your system resets the brakes every time you shift from first to second.  my 06 does it w/ ~2500 miles.  it is normal.

that link does work if you fix it, but its a repair procedure, NOT a diagnosis.

I have a 2006 Frontier SE V6 Auto doing the same thing. Sounds like a hammer hitting an anvil when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Goes away after first shift then returns when truck sits for even just a few minutes. Does anyone know what this is? I took it to the local Nissan Dealer and of course they didn't notice the clunk. I do notice that easier I accelerate the louder the clunk and vice versa.....the harder I accelerate the less the noise. ??????

I have been told the same thing.  Well, I was told that it's the anti-lock brakes "resetting" themselves.  The clunk is much louder on really cold days here in Mass.  But sometimes when it's REALY cold it won't clunk but will BUZZ very loudly.  The buzzing will not stop until I come to a complete stop, and then go forward again.  Then it goes away.  It sure is a scary sound.  It seems like if I just kept driving, it might be doing damage to something, but IDK.  Does anyone know if I should have the anti-lock mechanisms looked at?

For me the clunk is audible in the summertime as well.  But it's more of a click that you have to listen for.  You wouldn't hear it if you had the radio on.
