Your buddy is right, the flywheel stays with the engine.
There is a plate on the back of the engine, that stays with
the engine also. Be very careful, this unit is very heavy
and awkward. We use an adapter plate that bolts to the
trans and jack, so no falling off. If memory serves me
correct, there is a crank sensor in the upper left of the
bell housing area, this needs to be removed.

Yes, there is a sensor, and I've removed it. I have the unit strapped to my trans jack, and now the only issue seems to be separating the plate from the transmission. I have pried it, applying leverage from the crossmember immediately below the bell housing to a nice fat nub thereon, to no avail. I had the clutch rebuilt about a year and a half ago, and perhaps they really succeeded in sealing the plate to the tranny. I can't even get a razor knife in there!! I don't know what else to do to accomplish my goal, and have spent hours and a couple hundred buck on proper tools in the pursuit thereof. I am so close to getting it out, but spinning my wheels.

If there is any "stress" on the fit between the eng and
trans., it will make it difficult to pry apart. Try
lowering/raising the trans with your jack to find a "sweet"
spot, if you get my drift. Have you driven a wedge between
the trans and eng at the bell housing area to separate the
two.

So prying failed, and I suspect it is due to the sealant on either side of the plate separating engine and transmission. I have gotten about 3/16" of separation on the engine side of the joint (across the top thereof), and my buddy and I argued about whether the flywheel separates with the transmission. He says it doesn't, that the seal needs to be broken on the transmission side of the joint, and I am persuaded that that plate (and flywheel) is meant to come off with the transmission. In any case, I cannot break the transmission side seal. I am going to see if the mechanic who will repair the transmission will come out to give a look at it, but if I can avoid that added cost, I would be tremendously grateful. My buddy and I have quadruple checked that there are no bolts remaining that would keep them fastened. Sorry this post has so many issues!!!

are you looking for a tranny? I have one that was rebuilt aprox. 4k miles ago and worked flawlessly when the truck was parked 2 years ago and the transmission has been stored in a heated garage

Well, the problem with removal turned out to be the sealant between the bell housing and engine, added by the shop that did my clutch. $1350 later, I have a new cluster drive and other new components. This transmission/clutch is some kind of special application or something, as the repair cost always defies estimates by $100-200... To paraphrase both shop, "The ID number for your transmission is not the same as it shows in the book. It is a beefier unit than shown, as well." So now I am taking on the installation today. Too bad no one is around to help at the moment... Thanks for all your help! I will post again after I have it back in and on the road. This has proven to be quite the learning experience...
