I am working on the other side of the state from where I live, and about halfway here, going through the mountains, I lost my transmission except for 4th gear. I limped her out the rest of the way, because I need to work to pay for the work to be done. Also, I need to do the R/R myself to save money.
But I left my Haynes manual on the other side of the state!!!
I have tools and a garage, but not a procedure for dropping the tranny out. Can anyone help out with either the procedure itself or a good source?
Thanks for any help,

Dan

Not to be smart, but one bolt at a time! The main thing is
the shift tower, I unbolt the housing from the trans from
underneath the vehicle. Other than that, it is just a
matter of removing the obvious and keeping track of the
nuts and bolts. Depending on the equipment you have or not,
it may be easier to separate the transfer from the trans.
prior to removing the whole assy.(which is quite heavy and awkward w/o the proper trans jack adapter).

..

Be sure to mark the position of the drive shafts and the out put yokes so they can be replaced correctly. Have a helper under there with you!..

Good luck.. Don S..

Thanks for the advice! I decided to get another Chilton's for this undertaking... It comes in tomorrow, and I know I'll need a couple tools to do it. I think I'll have a roommate to help, and, in any case, I will be happy to save the R/R cost of $600. I will let y'all know how it goes...

Beyond 3/8 ratchet and wrenches, I see that I will need a 1/2 drive wrench to drain the oil and a tranny jack. Anything else I should be prepared to purchase?

I am kind of stuck. I have everything disconnected, driveshafts dropped, and the Haynes says to remove the torsion bars (really really don't want to...). I have the center crossmember disconnected and the tranny raised and supported, and would anticipate remove extension bell housing bolts and engine-tranny gussets (whatever those are; sure I'd figure it out) as the final step prior to dropping the tranny-xfer case assembly... However, I am having zero luck removing the center crossmember bolt. They are so frickin torqued I am sore from trying, and I do construction!!

So with that background, I have 3 questions-

1) Do I really need to remove the torsion bars?

2) What the heck do I need to do to remove the center crossmember, use a compressed air rattle gun?

3) Can I simply, as someone giving me a hand suggested, simply remove the bolts connecting the extension bell housing, transmission and transfer case? Then I could take it out piece by piece.

Thoughts?

#1 yes
#2 yes
#3 Not sure, I have always removed the bars and then
removed the trans as an assy.
#4 i believe you are in over your head w/o the proper tools
and support for the assy., it is very heavy and awkward. Be
careful!!!!!!

So I have gotten all the proper tools, have everything disconnected, all bolts out, torsion bars, cross member etc.... There is a jackstand under the oil pan blocked with a 2x4. I have the tranny jacked up and strapped to a transmission jack oriented properly to apply force appropriate to separate the engine and transmission.
Any tricks to get them to separate? My associate and I were thinking that, perhaps, the sealant was acting as glue would, and whenever we apply force to separate the assembly, the engine moves along with the tranny. We tried several angles/elevations, but not wanting to put too much stress on the input shaft/drive spline, we limited our attempts to within a couple inches of elevation.

Any input, as usual, would be greatly appreciated!!

There is no sealer per say, you need to wedge a pry bar
between the trans and engine and pry apart. Are you sure
all the bolts are out???

Yes, there are seven according to the Haynes, and they are all accounted for. I will do that immediately.

So prying failed, and I suspect it is due to the sealant on either side of the plate separating engine and transmission. I have gotten about 3/16" of separation on the engine side of the joint (across the top thereof), and my buddy and I argued about whether the flywheel separates with the transmission. He says it doesn't, that the seal needs to be broken on the transmission side of the joint, and I am persuaded that that plate (and flywheel) is meant to come off with the transmission. In any case, I cannot break the transmission side seal. I am going to see if the mechanic who will repair the transmission will come out to give a look at it, but if I can avoid that added cost, I would be tremendously grateful.
My buddy and I have quadruple checked that there are no bolts remaining that would keep them fastened.
Sorry this post has so many issues!!!
