tex i believe u are right there is some kind of problem in extreme cold mine seems to happen around -30 degrees celcius. i have tried many new large cold cranking amp batteries no difference but i didnt have the problem all summer. am not looking forward to dealing with this joke of a truck again this winter.
nissan dealerships tell me i need to bring the truck in while it will not start for them to fix the problem! hello the truck will not start how am i supposed to do that. i sure as hell am not taking a bunch of days of work paying a tow truck who knows how much to tow my car 900 kms to the nearest stealership and waiting around for the problem to happen to them !!! ud think with all the problems people are having with the ipdm or relays or whatever they would get their stuff straightend out!@

North Man,
Hate to here you are still having the problem after replacing the battery with a larger capacity one. I am still interested in the problem. Is it possible to check the voltage during the cranking when it will not start. The reason is that I noticed that the charging voltage most of the time is around 13.2 volts where my Tahoe charges at 14.2. I was told by a service tech that if the voltage dropped below 10 volts the fuel would not turn on therefore the engine would just crank without starting. I was wondering if the charging circuit is not keeping the battery at peak. I have a device I put on may truck to read the voltage in the cab. It is still pretty hot here in Texas so have not had the problem. I have been thinking about putting a week battery on to test the voltage again at start. My gut feeling is the problem has to do with the charging circuit or the ignition circuit where something is causing the voltage to drop below 10 volts. You can have a duplicate key may at a auto parts store without the security chip (couple of bucks) which will allow you to crank the vehicle without it starting. That way you can check to voltage on the battery cables not on the battery post. Check it when it is starting good and then when you have the problem. I would be interested in following up. TEX25000

i dunno if this information helps u at all tex or perhaps now frontier guy has heard of this problem since the last time i asked him for help.
last winter when the truck would not start after sitting in cold for a while. most of the times if i got someone to give me a boost my truck would start( which would agree with your theory) however once in a while a boost wouldnt even work! in those cases i left the truck sit there and tried again the next day after paying 100 dollars in cab rides to get home from work and back to work in the morning where my truck was sitting all night. i dunno if it just needed to sit there or if the temperatures were just warm enough to not have the problem happen!
it really is a losy feeling not knowing if your truck will start in the morning to get to work or to have to stay at a friends place overnight if i cqannot afford the cab rides home and back!! we have extremely long and cold winters here we got snow already and basically from end of sept till mid may there is a chance everyday that the problem will happen again
kinda the reason i bought the truck in the first place was to get a newer more reliable vehicle than my last and it is far from that right now! i just really cant believe that any nissan experts have not heard of the problem or know how to fix it!

NorthrnManitoba:
I don't know a fix... but in Amarillo Tx in the winter there was only a barbed wire fence between it and Canada. The lowest was -13f. I installed a 110 ac heater element in the the heater hose that had a little propeller. The bad starting problem was solved plus I had warm air instantly. This was a long time ago and it was a chevy... For other cars and trucks I put a 100 watt light bulb under the hood on cold nights. Magnetic heater eleiments were avaible you can stick under the pan.
Good Luck.. Don S..

Be sure to clean the battery terminals, clean and tighten
the ground at the front of the pass side timing chain
cover(difficult to see, follow ground cable from battery,)
clean and tighten 2 ECU grounds at top of drivers side
timing chain cover.

i will check those grounds that you noted frontierguy! can say corrosion or a bad connection only act up on really cold days and act normal 99.9% of the time.
can you please send me the rest of the info, like if the battery service doesn not fix the no start condition! i believe i did get a NATS code once, and thats when nissan dealership got me a new battery and cleared codes and sent me home. then the problem happened again. i dont believe i got more than one NATS code. and i dont believe i am getting any codes anymore!
