Oh yeah, NalleyJ83: if your clusters good and your charge
lights on (meaning you have continuity from your cluster
to your voltage regulator) break out a wiring diagram and
check the continuity of the circuit from your alternator
to your battery.

You can get a diagram in any off the shelf manual. There's
only a few wires and a couple fuses.

j.obfuscation, Exactly my point about "ISOLATION" and
sticking to the basics of trouble shooting. We don't have
time to perform test out of the circle, stick to the basic
test, make a conclusion and move on. By the way, your'e
welcome!!!!

if you put a meter across the
positive (charging) lead of the Alternator and the

short in the vehicles wiring.

Actually most alternators will only put out voltage if
the field wiring is energized. So no power to the field
terminal, no power output. So the .5v you're seeing is
probably residual in the air, probably from the ignition
system.

And while you're getting continuity through the rest of
the wiring, doesn't mean any voltage is coming down it to
energize the field winding. If you had checked for
voltage at the plug in you should have had battery
voltage at one of the terminals with the ignition on.

BTW, usually it's best to listen to the "master mechanic"
While I don't put much stock in Mechanic A, Mechanic B
ASE certs, (which I hold both ASE Heavy Truck Master
Tech, and some car+truck certs) 25+ years floor
experience lets you see a lot of stuff.

Hello;

I repair the instrument clusters on the 98-01 Frontiers. Besides the charge indicator light on the cluster there is a 100 ohm resistor that is in parallel with the light. This should provide the necessary voltage to the alternator to activate it. I tried to paste a picture of the charging circuit here but couldn't do it.  I will try and explain the circuit.

The charge circuit starts at fuse 11 (10A) which is hot in on or start. This goes to pin 29 of the cluster on a white/black wire. This is actually the ignition wire as well so if the cluster lights up and works power should be OK here. The ignition power goes through the parallel combination of the charge bulb and the 100 ohm resistor and out pin 27 of the cluster on a yellow/black wire and it shows this going to pin 3 of the alternator (yellow/black wire). During on or start conditions there should be an active voltage on the yellow/black wire. (I'm not sure how high the voltage should be).

check the cluster:

With the cluster removed check the back of it (pin 27 is on the left connector bottom right side. right below it is the abs bulb(ABS is imprinted on the circuit board). Just to the left of the ABS is the 100 ohm resistor. Check this resistor  that it is 100 ohms. Just to the right of the ABS is the "charge" bulb.

Sometimes the foil where the connectors get plugged into gets messed up so check this as well.

Alternator will not charge battery with cluster out . Since I repair the clusters some folks try and drive their vehicle with the cluster out and the battery dies in an hour. This is how I know the situation you are having.

Welcome to the group!

First remove, clean and replace all Battery and ground connections.

A local auto parts store will probably check the battery for you. If this doesn't fix it start a new thread about the problem and state what truck it is...

Have a cool one.. Don S..

..

Welcome to the group!

If the slow charge does not work post a new topic with all
the info about it.
It might be one of several ground wires not conducting.

Good luck..
