The problem is, it needs to be acting up at the time of the test. Are you sure all connections have been removed, cleaned and re tightened, including the ground down at the starter???

Morning FrontierGuy
I will check again today for the connections, but for the sake of arguement. How does a ground get tighter then loosen, then get tight again (or a rusted connection get any better). I can see the battery charge being higher after driving during the day (no heater fan running, no headlights....) than at night. Or driving on the hightway will give a higher charge on the battery than city driving. But out of the 5 times it didn't start, it was during the day (once early morning), not evening? I am totally baffeled
I am not critizizing your input what so ever. I appreciate you taking the time to think about it, and give me any idea's to check. I am mechanically inclined, but am NO mechanic, so I am just tring to get my head around your suggestion.
Thanks for sticking with this thread / problem. I will let you know Saturday night if I find anything for the connections.
cheers

Forgot to mention:
I was at the car wash last night and it would start when i went to leave. checked the lights when turning over the engine, and they definately went dim. If fact, the engine didn't start with the booster pack, until i turned the lights off. ??
Thanks again for any input

I should clarify, when I say at the car wash at night. It was 4:15 pm, still wasn't running lights or the heater fan. :) didn't want to contradict myself saying the problem didn't happen at night (after the sunsets)

A ground connection may be tight, but if there is corrosion at the connection, it can cause high resistance at times and not all the time. That is why it is very important to remove, wire brush to clean, re-install. When you say the lites dim, it sure sounds like a connection concern, battery or too much draw from the starter itself.

Update: Solution
Looks like it was the starter. I finally gave in and bought a new starter, not knowning for sure that would fix the problem. As soon as it was in, and started the first time (man it turns over fast now). The old one was slow turning over, just thought that was the way it was supposed to be.
No comparison now.
Hopefully this will fix the no starting once every 2 or 3 weeks....
Thanks to everyone that responded.
Cheers

I have had these same issues with my V6 Frontier. Occasionally it will crank very slowly with an almost "chirping" sound. Then it can go for days with normal cranking. It finally just quit cranking one day. Checked the battery and it was good under load. Just decided to replace the starter motor with a rebuilt one from NAPA. Solved the problem and now it cranks very quickly. $100 fix. 2 bolts securing the starter motor. 1 connection from the battery negative feed. The solenoid, which is attached to the starter, has a wire that unplugs about one foot up the line in a kind of modular connecter. Return the starter/solenoid to the parts store for your $38 core. Honestly, it could have just been a faulty solenoid, but I didn't really know how to test it. But replacing the starter and solenoid for $100 is great if you do it yourself. You probably save $250 counting towing and mechanic labor.
