Yes it does not matter , it is stuck and will
not accelerate to get over when passing at higher or
lower speed. Just keeps reeving up to 4,000 and above,
after messing with the gas it has come out. But when I
was on the freeway with a semi coming I could not get up
speed to get over thankfully the semi was far enough away
to get over.
Here is the horror more than this. The dealership in
Coos Bay Oregon has closed it doors the owners bailed and
Nissan Corporate cannot even get a hold of them. I have
contact Nissan and thier rep for this area will not
return my phone calls, but once. Left me a message I
have to go 250 miles to the nearest dealer. It is over
the mountain pass and its in the middle of storms here.
The truck does not even have 2,000 miles on it. Any idea
who I can contact before a lawyer? We are pretty much
screwed and have a 35,000 truck that has a major problem/
Thank you...desperate.

It will not come out of passing gear when you jump on it to
get around someone.. stays at high RPMS.. stuck!!! I do
not understand with all the experienced people here what is
so hard to understand about this. there is no sure way of
geting it out, its a nightmare, you let up off the gas its
stays at high rpms , you press it stays I am at the mercy
of the tach until it decides to go down or blow the engine

Experience or not, you can't fix something over the
internet. The vehicle needs to be taken to a dealer, verify
the concern, make appropriate repairs. You say that the
RPM's stay up even when letting off the throttle? For how
long? Your Murano is a CVT trans, whole different animal
than the Frontier transmission.

How long? Like until It stops.. so I am feathering the
gas do whatever I can to get it to back down. I was
paniced so did not time it. As far as taking it in the
dealer went bankrupt and closed its doors shortly after
we bought it, they did not even send in our payoff and we
were hounded by the credit department for a car we no
longer had we used for a trade in. And I cannot get
Nissan to get us a safe way to get it fixed as the
nearest dealer is now 4 hours a way and we are afraid to
drive it. Today finally and that is why I was here
looking to see if there was any insight, they are asking
corporate if they can give ua a loaner by tow truck then
take the truck after they said no before to bringing us a
rental. The nearest dealer (who does not do trannie)
called them and said it is dangerous and we should no be
made to drive 200 miles away let alone further.
So that is why I desparetely asked here.
I have driven probably more years than you have been born
respectfully race cars to semi trucks and what do you
feel is a okay time for it to come out of passing so I
can pick up speed and get over when that semi is oncoming
head on. This is serious. My God the truck is brand new
and has not 4,700 miles started problem at under 100
miles.
In all the cars I have driven in 67 years not one would
not come out of passing gear so a car may be different
but come on how can you say this?? I sure hope this is
not the answer we get at a dealer as it is wrong wrong
wrong, what is it doing to my tranny and engine at these
RPM's??

First off I'm only 78 and driven every thing except tracked vehicles. Plus been in automotive repair 25 years but out the last 28 years so please bear with me.
First you have a new 2012 what?
What RPM at what speed. And doesn't this 2012 have and overdrive lock-out button or switch?
Most trucks run a higher RPM than cars do.
Most dealers that skip grab all the money they can when they run. I've seen it before with a Rambler Dealer. Many dealerships don't have an automatic transmission man so have a trusted out of house source.
It's sad you got involved with cooks.. Don S..

You have me beat by 5 years. It is a Nissan Frontier
that is why I posted in the Frontier section. It is
under warranty and they do need to send it to a
specialist. There is a OD switch that is set to ON
everytime the engine is started and engages when the
engine reaches operating temps/ this switch according to
the Nissan manual is only switched to OPF when driving up
and down long slopes mot for normal driving and is not to
be switched while driving so not understanding what
relevance it has when passing? While the car is running
it does run at a higher RPM than a car but what does this
have to do with it not coming out of passing gear? I go
back into my lane and the RPMS are racing until they
don't and it sounds like the car is going to blow up. No
matter how fast I am going its reving at lets say 3500 to
4000 rpm/ no car or truck I have driven and I have trucks
stay reving up like this and wont disingage out of
passing gear...passing gear. I was at a stop sign and
went around another car and it stuck and war reving up at
a high RPM going about 20 mph if that fast. It happens
at a high or low speed. Again how long do you feel it
should take for it to come out of passing to a higher
gear to stop the RPMS from Reeving up"? Here we have a
4.0 where we had a 3.5 and this truck is guttless
literally .. anything within the passing gear is gutless
and when you have to floor it to pass someone it wont'
come out of that gear..

I’m not familiar with the 2012 automatic transmission. Most would have 3 forward gear ratios plus and over drive. Then on top of that it would have a lock-up torque converter. When my torque converter locks up (about 35mph) the RPM drops about 50. The over drive and lock-up torque converter are mainly for economy. There is no passing gear. For added power and speed for passing the transmission simply shifts down to the next appropriate gear (some times 2 gears) and this will cause the rpm to increase a bunch.
You may just have a throttle position sensor not giving the computer the proper signal for down shifting.
I have driven my Frontier a long way locked out of overdrive with zero problems except for using more gasoline.
BTW my 2008 Camry transmission operates the same as my 1999 Frontier.
Good Luck.. Don S..

there is no problem at a dead stop. the problem is it
will not come out upshift. took it to Nissan and before
we even took it out they said it is the way it is. So
took it out, and at 45 went to pass and it stuck at 6000
rpms and would not upshift .. the tech said "Did you let
up off the gas? my husband said yes i am at 90 mph and
he said ... you have to keep the accelerator down until
it upshifts!!! It was on the red 90 mph got to 100
before it came out. So hubby took another Frontier same
year 2012 out and it did the same thing. So Nissan is
saying there is no problem??? No problem. Right on
the red on the tac and no problem. Going way over the
speed limit but no problem. We are just sick. Just
bought the car and they refuse to see a problem. It is
not just at high speeds happens when passing at lower
speeds and sticks at 4500 rpms. I comes out when it is
ready/ If anyone has any suggestions we have many years
now to pay on this truck on how we can avoid this
nightmare. thank you

Please tell me what is the RPM at say at a speed 60 MPH (like 2600RPM at neutral throttle) then you ‘stomp’ on the accelerator to pass another vehicle. Does the RPM.
#1 slowly climb to like 2800 RPM and the speedometer slowly climb to 65 or 70 MPH?
#2 you suddenly get pushed back in your seat and RPM suddenly jump to like 3300 RPM?
If #1 is the way it acts you do have a problem and it means the transmission is not DOWN shifting to the next lower gear. In the old days a 1950 Cadillac would not down shift above 60MPH. A 1950 Oldsmobile 88 would not down shift above 70MPH. At low speeds some transmissions will down shift two lower gears at one time and it depends on how far you push the accelerator down.
All transmissions upshift back to the highest gear at highway speeds when you ease or get off the accelerator. I was test driving a 1959 Plymouth Fury Police interceptor. If the throttle was held on the floor it wouldn’t shift into ’high gear’ until 120 MPH and laid rubber while doing it. The high light of this story was it was ‘cutting out’ and needed a tune-up. It then ran pretty good with new plugs!
If you state where you live (town) perhaps one of us lives near enough to help with the problem.
Good Luck.. Don S..

It shifts out of the first gears no problem. When I go
to pass lets say at 45 mph get to 55 the rpms go up to
5000 rpms even at that there is not thrown back in the
seat it however when letting off the accelerator will not
upshift and the rpms stay at 5,000 and if I accelerate
they climb even higher once now 6,000 trying to get it to
shift. The Nissan tech said not to let up that is why he
said the computer is not getting the message and to keep
accelerating which is INSANE.. the rpms are on the red
line. It will finally kick out and the rpms go down but
something is not right. I have backed off I have tried
to feather the gas nothing will stop the rpms from
roaring at high levels until the truck decides when.
i was just mailed the Nissan report and all it says it
truck running normal. We live in Brookings Oregon right
by the border of California.
