how hard is it to replace the knock sensor in that s/c motor? i put a code reader on it and thats what it said was bad. i always run premium gas in my truck and every month i run a can of sea foam through a tank also. im just new to the supercharger world and hope soon to be able to figure all this out on my own but for now i gotta ask questions. hit me backl and thanks ahead of time

What "code reader" are you using BENT_TWIG85?  I'm curious about Frontierguy's last two thoughtful posts too, as I run hi-octane, don't have pre-ignition or any significant loss of power which the by-pass valve would likely cause.  Lookin' into the Knock Sensor as well.

I'm checking my warrenty, but, I can't imagine I'm anywhere near still being covered for engine/drive-train after 7 years for a full S/C Nissan replacement.

Got this from Wiki Answers, looks like this relatively inexpensive item is really buried and a lot of qualified tech work to go in after(?)  This discussion however, looks to be regarding a non S/C vehicle.  Going to keep researching the S/C model issue.  Might be not replacing this sensor has more consequences on S/C models.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_replace_a_knock_sensor_ on_a_Nissan_Frontier

""...it is located under the intake manifold in the center (v6) and on the side of the engen block on the 4 cylinder
it's a lot of work, but the sensor is located under the intake manifold. It requires removing the upper half of the intake manifold, the injector rack, the the bottom half of the intake manifold. Remember to release the fuel pressure, drain the coolant and keep track of all your parts. While you have that off, It's best to go ahead and change the plugs.

Ok heres the 411 on it. its a useless sensor its throwing a code P0325. yes its a pain in the *** to replace, but its not doing anything to your engine as far as fuel economy or timing. So in short just let it be. my 2000 frontier has the same problem.
Nissan/Toyota Tech""

Still reading on...

If it is "useless", why is it designed to retard the timing??? If you have a DTC for it, replace it. I don't have the time to dissect and analyze every situation that arises on Nissans. If a part fails you replace it and move on. If you have never done a knock sensor, I would suggest finding someone who has. They are pretty much straight forward, but there are a couple of tricky procedures involved, especially with the S/C engine.
ergomoto- autozone or advance will check your DTC's for free.

IM USEING MY DIABLO SPORT PROGRAMMER AS A CODE READER TOO AND IT KEEPS TELLING ME THE SAME THING THAT I HAVE A KNOCK SENSOR GONE BAD. I ERASE THE CODE AND THEN I DRIVE MY TRUCK AND WITHIN 20 MILES ITS BACK ON. I WILL REPLACE IT IF I KNEW HOW TO GET TO IT. WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD IS THAT U HAVE TO PULL THE S/C AND ITS IN THE VALLEY. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I SHOULD EVEN ATTEMPT THIS REPLACE OR LET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS A THING OR 2 ABOUT A S/C CAUSE LIKE I SAID I HAVE NEVER HAD A S/C MOTOR BEFORE

Here's the Knock Sensor on an otherwise striped VG33.  This shows just how deep in the Knock Sensor is under the S/C and intake manifold.

Got an answer for you BENT_TWIG85 on the Eaton M62 oil capacity!

Or in all honesty, a good boots-on-the-ground description and pic (not a direct tech manual quote) of the fluid volume of the replacement oil bottle.

 =8oz=

More to the point, it's actually only the nose cone on the supercharger that's filled with specialized oil.  And conveniently, once the old oil is siphoned out, the nose cone is simply refilled until the oil starts to dribble back out of the dime sized, Torx Plug filler whole in the front of the nose cone (just to the left of the pulley stem).

I just changed my nose cone's oil and coupler with one of the eBay kits that are so prominent now.  (Just search eBay motors for Eaton M62 and you'll get the idea.)
See the attached pics for example of the two bottles -one nearly refilled (not including the residue in the drain can and siphon syringe) with old oil and the second bottle (supplied for presumably larger nose cones) still full with fresh GM oil. This kit came with their own bottles filled with bulk purchased GM supercharger oil.  But other kits just sell the actual individual 8oz GM bottles as well.

The second (before) pic of the kit includes rear roller bearings and nose cone seal -not included in the kit*.  I purchased them in addition to the kit from this distributor for a complete supercharger rebuild.  The third is of the Torx Drain/Filler Plug.

I'll be posting my own thread on "elective supercharger maintenance" and a Pulley Boyz upgrade later today, posting my impression of products,  installation, and relative repair and improvement.

Best
Mark S

Thanks frontierguy.

There is a lot of great stuff on the internet, and a lot of unworkable nonsense as well.  That's what's even a greater resource about focused forums with good moderation were members can sort through it all and hopefully find real solutions, fixes, and improvements, as well as a sense of topical automotive community.

Hope to read what you think of my S/C progress when I post later tonight.

Cheers,
Mark S
