number 1 rated muffler on the planet for a reason but

a muffler .... thats a straight pipe and for say 5 bucks a foot for
straight pipe why would anybody buy a muffler |

I'll use an extreme example to illustrate the concept.
I have a suppresor on an AR-15. It is obviously a straight
through pipe so that the bullet can pass through unobstructed. Does it
do a good job reducing the sound? Absolutely.

The problem with that reasoning, oh human encyclopedia, is that a sound suppressor on a weapon doesn't act as a straight pipe alone, it adds a larger volume to the end of the barrel, the way it does this is in the form of baffles/chambers for the escaping gas which is under pressure in upwards of thousands of psi (thus the BANG, when you fire a gun) and allows the pressure to be reduced over a larger area so it doesn't create as large of a report once it escapes the end of the barrel on the suppressor as well.
and as far as the straight pipe vs. the baffled/chambered mufflers providing a smoother line of power is probably associated with the backpressure being maintained better thus giving a "projectile" of sorts to push out the other end, i'm not an expert on physics by any means, but that would make sense to me with the training i've had in physics.

This is exactly the same way a straight through Magnaflow (or most other straight through mufflers) works.
Glad your keeping up with me.
The exhaust gas exits mostly down the centerline of the pipe. The
sound waves enter the larger chamber surrounding the pipe, which
contains the baffles or sound reducing materials.

WOW.....
I put a Flowmaster 50 series SUV on my 06 Nismo. It does give it a deeper sound outside the truck, but hardly any change inside the truck. It did add a couple of horses and yes, it does sound great. Flowmaster makes a variety of configurations from 3" in/out to 2.25 in/out. It was well worth the $200 for parts and install.

by the way that is also called a muzzel break and if you pay attention to detail you will see the sides of it are slotted out it is not a scilence as you are leading on to but in fact a flash suppressor or muzzel break this allowes the weapon to be fired so the shooter does not get A.K.A. gunshy from the kick back and also helps with the repeted accuracy furter more look it up you can also have a barrel magna ported which are (if you will ) tiny slashes in the barrel to again give you more control of your weapon then on top of all that you can have the weapon bedded to the stock which again helps for accuracy..

Thanks for the info but when I say
suppressor I actually mean sound supressor or silencer or can, as some call
it. I've built my share of AR's, as you can see. I know the
difference between a flash suppressor, a break and a sound suppressor.

I have an 01 supercharged king cab with a magnaflow system and I wish it was a little louder. When I floor it the superchager winds up and thats about all I can hear from in the cab.

I have an '06 crew cab 4.0 and I have a Magnaflow on it. I installed it in September and now it is for sale. Any takers? I like the sound outside of the cab but the resonance inside is terrible. I have always been a Flowmaster man (had them on the last 4 trucks I've owned) and decided to try something new this time. Not anymore. I just bought a 50 series and will install it after Christmas when life slows down a bit. Just my $.02.
