Over the past ten years or so, I have found that switching both a Saturn and a full size Chevy truck from din to Mobil 1 resulted in 1mpg or more increases.  This was accompanied by using Mobil gear lube and Mobil 1 ATF where appropriate.  I really noticed a difference in the winter in city driving as the fluids don't thicken up like regular stuff.  Better on the moving parts on cold days and better mileage.  Mobil 1 now has a 0W-30 you can use in place of 5W-30 for even better gas mileage.

Will switching to synthetic oil hurt my engine if I have been running conventional oil. It has about 30K on it, with oil changes about every 3-4K.

Also, what is a reasonable expectation in increased mileage if I add a K&N air filter.

No, the change should only be beneficial.  Where you get into a problem switching to syn is when you have run dino for years and allowed sludge to build up.  The syn oil is aggressive in dissolving sludge and this can cause leaks where sludge has built up in a gasket/flange area.  But with the changes you did, you should be OK.  Go to Wal-Mart and buy Mobil 1 in the 5 qt containers.  It is about $23 for regular syn Mobil 1 and a few dollars more for the stuff you can leave in for a year or 15,000 miles.   Always use a good quality filter like a Wix, NAPA Gold or Nissan OEM.
