Fronteer, VW did make a truck. It looked like a mini-Honda with a one piece construction. It came and went with little fanfare and no fan base. I think these were sold in the 70s or the 80s. Does anyone else remember these?

The only VW pickup truck I know was a rebadged Toyota Helix.

Ha! No, he's right. The VW Rabit Caddy Truck. In fact, I could have sworn the current issue of Truck Trend had a picture of it, but I can't find it. Yes, that's EXACTLY what I meant, Boomer! Just what I need to pull my 31 ft. ultralight. LOL

Anyway, thanks for letting me bitch, folks. I will definitely keep the Frontier because thinking that it was actually a decent vehicle, I went and spent a bunch of money early on, on the stereo and accessories, and right now the truck is exactly the way I want it. I'm definitely going to call my insurance company, though, because I'm curious if my "comprehensive" policy covers having a major component like this blow up when the warranty's up. No way am I coughing up $4,200 in parts and labor for anything. I'd just as soon peel the "4X4" stickers off the back and sell it as a 2WD! LOL I'm still thinking about how unrealistic it was of me to have been looking at a lift kit and bigger tires if the thing can't even handle lugging itself around around in stock form, but I guess I have to try to buck up and convince myself that this is a freak occurrence.

Hmm... this is how it started. I wonder if this had anything to do with it:
NTB06056
The service bulletin doesn't describe the consequences of not making this adjustment when the pop/clunk sound occurs in the front differential. Perhaps a pile of gear bits in the pan...? ;-)

..
Fronteeer;
Hopefully we can think of it as an unusual occurrence. I have seen in the past a bad part, debris, sabotage, and of course high speed wheel spin then sudden traction destroy a differential… but not in a front Nissan… yet. The new D-44s rears do not seem to be as strong as the Nissan rear in my’99 4x4.
Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..
Higher fuel mileage? We need a government study to show the benefits of making ethanol from Marijuana and Agaves plants.
Alas .. Probably be more suicides from those trying to die by exhaust fumes.

Yeah, I hope so too. I loved this truck so much until my recent string of bad luck with it, and I'll probably love it again once this is a distant memory, if it behaves itself for a while and lets me forget! I will say that having an amazingly awesome dealer has helped a lot. They've done a first-rate job of fixing everything so far and I've had the opportunity to drive just about everything in Nissan's fleet since they give me a loaner off the lot every time I bring my truck in for service.
I'm not that impressed with most of the cars. I find them lacking substance. The Murano LE rattled so much inside it drove me nuts (very surprising) and the suspension was sloppy and unresponsive with major body roll and oversteer. The Frontier XE manual was incredibly unrefined as compared to my SE--a different truck altogether--and there are stupid things about it like the window cranks are jammed between the seat and the door so you'd have to have skinny, girl arms to turn them. The Versa and the Sentra I'm driving now are ugly as sin but adequate, and the six-speeds are pretty smooth but feel like I could break them easily if I wasn't gentle. The Altima is ugly, but less so than the 'pug' and the Sentra, and the interior is just... strange, but it's one of the most fun vehicles I've ever driven. Nissan's engines are by far its forte, and the Altima goes like hell with such quiet finesse that you'd swear it was electric. The interiors of the cars (except for the Z) are weird though, dude, I don't get them at all. The Z, Frontier, Pathfinder, Titan and Armada look and feel like they're made by a different company. Like Infiniti's, in fact, which are all works of art IMO.
