I hear ya . I have always been good about changing the oil on time and I keep a log book. Its just new and I want to get the full 6 years out of it you know. Plus I thought If I could use SYN and get like 4-5k out of it great you know. I have heard horror storries about FRAM I do like NAPA , WIK , PUROLATOR all closely realted I bleieve. I thank all of you for the input. I believe last time I was at walmart I asked the guy in the auto section about their oil and he checked and said it was havoline but like you said It depends on the part of the country you are in. I did check on napa oil and it its a definate valvoline which is what I have always used. Well thanks again guys.

I'd run Mobil1 5w30 synthetic and a good filter.

With that you *could* easily get 10,000 out of it before changing.  I would not do it myself, but you can.  I've known guys who've run crap regular oil and gotten over 15,000 miles out of it (the right way, having the viscosity and properties checked and changing the filter).

I run Mobil1 and either a Nissan filter or a Mobil1 filter, and I change both every 5k.  I just did it on Sunday actually and it still comes out almost completely clean with 5,000 on it.

Here we go agian, there is no end to this topic and there is no end to the
questions, scenarios and possibilities. I am currently posting my oil
analysis results with amsoil mod grade 5w30 in an other post. I am
changing out my filter and 400 ml of oil each time to compensate for the
filter volume and sample volume. I sample every 6000 km and so far am
about 18000 km into it. It is supposed to be good for 40000 km though.
We;ll see.
I agree fully as to to the crapiness of fram filters, I can testify 1st hand. I
use napa oil filters too.
I have heard that synthetic oil benefits a new engine more so than an
older one because the possibility of developing leaks is less. And IF they
do truly lubricagte better, why wait till the engine is shot to start treating
it good? Amsoil did not lower my engine temps, start easier in -55 C,
nor help my mileage. But i still do not have any alerts for wear metals or
viscosity ratings yet. I'll soon be at 24000 km woth almost entoirely city
driving.
However, in order for this to become a wise financial venture, I would
hacve to get the full 40000 km out of every amsoil change. Factor in the
price of the oil here, the filters and the oa. It started out as a >$60 ptrice
tag, whereas the con. oil was about $12. Big diff.
The wisest advice and the only tru way top know for sure is to have the
oil analyzed, then you are not guessing.
One last point...my gf's car is a chev with conv. oil and she only lets me
change her oil when the little monitor tells her to. She is getting 12000
km every interval from all downtown city driving. Chev is ready to honour
their warranty based on this practice, so that should tell you something
right there.

Boneyard,

This is a late post I know. It sounds like your not happy with the gas mileage and probably won't hold onto your truck much longer than the warranty, if that long.  Just use conventional oil or Walmart Synthetic (under $15/gal and API certified) and the factory Nissan filter. That oil is cheap enough to change every 3-4K.  Check out mynismo.com for oil/air filters, belts, drain plug gaskets, etc... The filter runs about $5.50-5.75 I think. Just my .02

dannyg, i do not know who makes the carquest oil, one way to find out is flip the bottle over and see if it has any information on it (probably a silly idea..because you probably have already looked). there is really no way to say how good or bad it is going to be. the most reliable way to tell the status of oil is to run UOA's, a VOA will let you know what your oil is made up of, but that is not directly correlated to the longevity of the oil once running in your motor. oil manufacturers are always toying and reformulating oils to get better performance, at a lower cost, and meet govt regulations for emissions and what not, which are always getting more and more strict.

i have heard good things about wix filters, mobil1 filters, pureone and purolator premiums, and yes...everyone poopoos the wicked orange cans from fram. I will say that i have used the fram tough guards (built a little bit better and use a synthetic blend media) w/o issue. i will also add that i have used the orange frams as well w/o an issue, but i don't think i'd use them again, because i would wonder about extended OCI's and their ability to handle the longer run. i wouldn't use the fram extended guard only because they have some PTFE impregnated (teflon) media and conventional wisdom says teflon and internal combustion engines aren't a very good mix. I have never heard of an issue with that line of filters either though. the thing is...several lines of filters made for auto parts stores (national chains) are made by a company called champion, made for the reseller's specs whoever that company is, it could be wix as well, they make filters fore more than one company i believe.....anyway...enough of my verbosity.
