i am burning regular gas and getting lousy mileage; best i have seen is 15.5 miles to the gallon!!! i bought used. is this normal for this vehicle; most of my driving is highway at 70 mph with the cruise on......

..

66L72;

Welcome to the group!.

There are several threads here about fuel mileage. In many places in the USA corn ethanol is noticably dropping fuel mileage... it happened to my vehicles!

Here is a link to an article with some ideas about getting better mileage.

http://groups.msn.com/JEEPTECH101/jeeptech.msnw?action=get_m essage&mview=1&ID_Message=332

Have a good one while you can still laugh about it.. Don S..

Laws such as the use of corn ethanol are driving up the cost of living (have you been to the grocery store lately) without driving up wages. This equates to a lower standard of living (but not in China) thanks to Agro-lobbyists and corrupt and ill-informed lawmakers.

My 2000 fronty crew cab doesn't get really good milage either. I guess it's the nature of the BEAST!  Tighten your tires up to 38 or 40 lbs. it helps a little.

Zoomer, I have done some careful studies on my 2007 Frontier Crew cab with V-6 and automatic.  I get the best meileage with hi-test gas, getting almost 25 on one leg of a trip (posted elsewhere on this board).  I do keep my tires about 5 psi above the recommended level.  I also am running Mobil 1 5W-30 in the engine and have Mobil 1 gear oil 75W-90 in the rear diff.  Others have found that they get better mileage on lower octane gas but Ithink it is worth the experiment to try higher octane.  Keep very good written records.

Also, drive like there is an egg shell under the gas pedal, keep your speed closer to 60 tha 70 and anticipate stops (roll up to them).  Make sure that you have a clean air filter on the truck (have you changed it recently?).

hi again

thanks for all the replies. i am in canada and so far we havent got any "corn gas in my area". (thankfully- what a misguided project that one is)

i do a 40 mile run down a freeway every day. when i reset the mpg meter, put it on cruise at 70mph the best i can get it to read is 15.5 with the cruise on. i have tried the goldfish in the backseat driving style and it doesnt help. Air filter is a good idea; i just assumed my virginia dealer would have serviced the truck before he sold it to me;

as far as mobile 1 goes i am using that in one of my cars and i hate those $100 oil changes; this tank looks like i will get about 220 miles

nismo for sale if it doesnt improve!!! i will check out some of your suggestions.......thanks again

I do my own oil changes and pay about $21 US for a five quart container of Mobil 1 5W-30 at WalMart. With a Wix (Napa Gold) filter, the whole thing runs me about $26-27 and about  20 minutes of time.  I usually change out at 5000 miles or so on that oil.

Also check on your fuel filter.  I am not sure where our truck's filter is or even if it is accessible but that is something else to check.  Also, the oxygen sensors typically show low gas mileage as they wear out on any vehicle. With a 2006, I would not expect that to be the case with your truck, however.

Things that can affect mpg:

-Dirty/clogged air filter
-Tire inflation
-Using the correct gear
-Keep the truck clean
-Driving habits
-Proper maintenance
-Extra/excess weight

Also fully synthetic fluids often help.  If you have the 4.0, you really should run premium fuel (there is a thread on this issue).

By the way -- I average 20mph in my 4x4 4.0 auto frontier w/ no tonneau.

And boomer -- I hope you are putting more than 5qts in that 4.0.  It takes mroe than that.  I use the same oil Mobil 1 5w30 but I've been using the Mobil1 filter.

damn; $21 for 5 qts of mobil 1; that cost me $45.00 up here; i will start bring some in from buffalo when i go down there.

i am taking the truck to the dealer tomorrow to put it on the computer and see whats what; i hope i find a clogged air cleaner for one and maybe a computer glitch for another; yesterdays trip i did at 70 mph instead of 80 and managed to get the meter to go to 16.1;

by the way; what is the mph reading on the digital readout; doesnt seem to have any relationship to speed....?

thanks for the replies; i will keep you posted

by the way i put a set of goodyear fortera silent armor tires on. huge difference from the OE. much quieter and great wet and dry traction. very happy with them.

Hsckris, I do use 5-3/8 quarts of Mobil 1.  I have about 5 one quart containers in the garage and I just add to the 5 gallon s from the big container.  Sorry I was less than specific on this.  Thanks for pointing this out so it doesn't screw anybody up when they change oil!
