ok, i've seen thjis a million times and you're gonna hate me. Make SURE the shifter is in nuetral. Your neitral safety switch is designed to work EXACTLY as the situation you are describing. If you have a manual trans then never mind. But it might be a clutch safety switch, but not likely cause I disabled mine and all works fine. Also check your maxi fuses. Not to be confused or found near your regular fuses. These suckers are very expensive and very large. They can be 50 amps to 200 amps. TGhere are usually two so that yoiu will not lose everything at once. It is like a warning system. Some vehicles will just be very hard to start even with full batteries if only olne is blown. Sorry I got here late, miught have saved a little cash. Let me know when the repair place calls you back with the fix.

Same symptom, different problem...
I'm having the same symptoms with my '01 Frontier. The starter clicks
once when you try to start it, then everything goes dead. But more
particularly, the whole circuit goes dead on key position 3. New battery
didn't work, jump-starting the old or new battery didn't work.
I've traced the problem to either the ignition switch or the circuit it's on.
Resistance on the positive battery terminal goes down to zero when I put the
key in position 3, but if I detatch the ignition switch cables from the circuit,
the resistance stays high. So maybe an exposed wire in the circuit, or
hopefully just a faulty ignition switch. I'll post the details when it gets
sorted out.

No, I'm afraid the negative battery cable is fine. I took it out of the frontier
and connected it to my other car, which started up without any problems. In
any case, the ignition switch replacement will be here in a couple of days, so
hopefully that will be the end of it.

I/ve been doing some investigation at work and positon 3, should be the start position on the ignition. If htis is the case, then everything is supposed to go dead when you go there. This should be tghe momentary position. The circuit is designed to cut all loads to allow maximum power for starting. Every bus as work and every car I have owned have done that. That would make me suspect a starter. It's kinda scary because after the ignition and starter and cables, all that's left would be the ecu! Do you by any chance ahve aftermarket starter, alrams installed? That's what killed my pathy. I had to bypass it to get it to work. I guesss what happened was that when the starter shorted out it blew the aftermarket remote starter and larm system. Even the new starter and physically shorting across the terminals wouldn't get it to go. Ran new wire to the starter and away she went, for five years.

Well after 5 days of hunting and waiting for this part, I finally got my
replacement ignition switch, swapped it out, and the truck started up just
fine.
