In reference to Gordo looking for marine 5200.  I am sure that it is used by your local marinas or anyone that works on boats.  I know this because I manufacture custom canvas and seats for boats and I spend alot of time around marinas.  As far as the experience I had with that company, if I am able to save anyone the foolishness I was put through then I would consider the money I feel like I lost a lesson well learned.   I will keep posting when ever I have a good, or bad experience and also if I find anything new for the Frontier.

Well this is where the rubber meets the road; Canoe season is here and my truck needs to carry one.  I have found no suitable off the shelf racks, and a rail system would be too low for my use.

On Monday I will install a couple of 6" x 1.5" artificial rain gutters on the roof of my '07 crew cab so I can put Thule towers and a bar at the front of my cab, to hold up the canoe.  I have to remove some of the roof liner (roll it inward) to be able to drill get backing plates and nuts on the inside.

My dealer seems to think I'm nuts but gave me some pointers on dealing with the roof liner, so I know enough to get the job done.  I will forget the 4 holes when the job is done and everything works.

One question... The artificial rain gutters came with a rubber pad, but I'm thinking I should not use it.  I would just use silicone liberally between the gutter and the roof, and between the roof and the backing plate.  I would use painter's tape to protect the roof from excess silicone that would squeeze out when I tighten the bolts.

Any comments or tips?

Gord

I thought I had found the way to go with the yakima traks system, but the roof is double skinned and they won't work.  I had a pair of Yakima Outdoorsman 300 racks ordered, but I haven't had a chance to put them on and now I have a new truck so I will put them on there and find out how they work.

The roof isn't actually double skinned, but it does have four re-inforcement bulkheads running across it (crew cab roof) which do not quite touch the skin - maybe 1/16" apart with just a bit of glue between them once in awhile.  I have the approximate locations of these if anyone needs them.  I know a fellow on Club Frontier (nismo05?) installed a track system on his truck successfully - maybe he was blessed in managing to miss all the bulkheads.  Gord

The installation turned out OK, but I learned something I'll pass along...  When I put my canoe on after initial installation, I found that the roof skin is not really sturdy enough to just bolt the gutters to it.  So I had to go into the roof again, make brackets to tie into the lateral stiffeners, and J-B weld the works together.  Now it is much more rigid and will work well for my purposes.  I decided while I was at it to put on rear gutters as well, shown in the picture with no rack in place.  I will just use those in winter to carry skis.

Has anyone ordered one of these racks?

http://www.worktrucksusa.com/servlet/Detail?no=140

It's kind of like that Trac Rac product, except instead of $1,000 it costs only about $300, and it hooks into the existing Nissan racks in the bed of the truck rather than having to install its own tracks.  I would just like to make sure that the company is legit.  There have been a few shady companies out there.

I have a2005nismo w/o a rack and have realized the same problem when trying to figure outhow to carry a kayak!! their are a couple solutions. the1st is in northern tool.com, its called contractor rack kit. It connects to bed rail. I have bed rail covers and a vynale cover so  its n/g for me. 2nd option is this modulur metal framing and support systhem called KINDORF used to fasten electrical conduit to concreate or what ever. Basicly its like working with an erector set.Connect it to your channel rail systhem in the configuration you need and your set. You can get it at h.d. in electrical section. Great stuff for any mounting situation. I hope this helps some people.

I haven't bought it yet but I think I've decided on this one:

They even sell it at Home Depot now!

I have always relied on Yakima Stuff.  I am still using the original raingutter towers I bought in early '88.  I have used the Side Loaders and the Top Loaders with absolutely no problem for almost as long.  I have a set of the Side Loaders in the rear of my 89 Bronco fiberglass roof and they've absorbed all manner of abuse without loosening.  I plan to use a combination of Side Loaders and Top Loaders for carrying canoes and everything else on my Crew Cab/fiberglass cab-high shell.

Jroeder, do you have the factory cab racks on your truck, or has Yakima come up with supports that will work on it?  When I was in the market for racks last spring they didn't make any to fit.  Thule didn't either.  Gord
