Well this is where the rubber meets the road; Canoe season is here and my truck needs to carry one. I have found no suitable off the shelf racks, and a rail system would be too low for my use.
On Monday I will install a couple of 6" x 1.5" artificial rain gutters on the roof of my '07 crew cab so I can put Thule towers and a bar at the front of my cab, to hold up the canoe. I have to remove some of the roof liner (roll it inward) to be able to drill get backing plates and nuts on the inside.
My dealer seems to think I'm nuts but gave me some pointers on dealing with the roof liner, so I know enough to get the job done. I will forget the 4 holes when the job is done and everything works.
One question... The artificial rain gutters came with a rubber pad, but I'm thinking I should not use it. I would just use silicone liberally between the gutter and the roof, and between the roof and the backing plate. I would use painter's tape to protect the roof from excess silicone that would squeeze out when I tighten the bolts.
Any comments or tips?
